Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage - Girl Band
Blawan’s original version of this sick dance ditty creeps me out, but in the hands of fuzzy, noisy Girl Band, it is a pounding, hypnotic riot cum rave.
The blurry distortion, sqwarking (not an actual word, but the only one that will do) guitars and bashy drums lead us into the song’s title refrain with all the grace and subtlety of a bulldozer driven by a twelve-year-old on crystal meth. Delivered by frontman Dara Kiely sounding like Alex Kapranos in a strop, the song is a chant, shifts into an incantation, and by the end, you may as well put Satan on speed-dial.
Stuart Berman wrote *the best* description of these guys in his review of The Early Years EP for Pitchfork. I can’t better it, so I’ll nick it:
You don’t so much listen to a Girl Band song as get strapped into it: militaristic drum stomps mimic the beat of your pounding heart; foreboding, unidentifiable noises emerge suddenly from unseen corners seemingly by the push of a button; and, as they pile on the punishment with sadistic glee, your convulsions effectively form a new dance move.
