June 27th, 1982 - Space Shuttle Columbia, Ken Mattingly II and Henry Hartsfield Jr. launch from Cape Canaveral on the fourth shuttle mission and final test flight of the orbiter, STS-4.
Columbia carried a payload of science experiments from Utah University students, and a classified Air Force payload. STS-4 would last seven days, before landing at Dryden.

Mattingly II, and Henry W. Hartsfield Jr. A T-38 aircraft serves as a chase plane (just above center of photo) in the background. Not long after this photograph was made and the crew had egressed their craft, President Ronald Reagan addressed a giant crowd on hand at Edwards AFB for a special kind of July 4 celebration."

"Columbia Space Shuttle astronauts Commander Thomas K. Mattingly, foreground, and Pilot Henry W. Hartsfield salute President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, as the astronauts begin the customary walk-around inspection of the orbiter after landing at Edwards Air Force Base, California. Mattingly and Hartsfield were the first to land the Shuttle on a concrete runway. The landing proved that the shuttle could return safely to a precisely targeted location on Earth."
