#fallforcostume Day 30: Texture⁠ ⁠ I can't believe I never got a photo of the finished costume! I've only worn this one once, and I was staffing at @chicagotardis, so the only photo I have is this progress shot I snapped in a mirror in my sewing room.⁠ ⁠ Although Zoe Heriot's famous sparkly jumpsuit only ever appeared on TV in black and white, actress Wendy Padbury had told fans that it was purple. My efforts to find a sparkly purple Lurex knit met with failure, so In order to replicate the look of the original, I ended up layering a silver-and-black mesh fabric over metallic purple Spandex (and using a vintage sewing pattern designed for less-stretchy fabric, so the shaping was tailored in rather than relying on the fabric to stretch -- important because the fabrics had two different stretch ratios). This layering produced a nice shimmer effect when it moved, and the mesh surface texture kept the Spandex from being too reflective.⁠ ⁠ When I met Wendy Padbury (she was a guest at the con where I wore this), she remarked on the fabric and asked me where I'd found it, since apparently nobody has been able to source the original material anywhere.
