DAY ONE: Alfie comes home
The car journey was better than expected. My house is about 40mins from Dogs Trust and I brought one of my house mates to keep him company on the back seat. I know he had travelled in the Dogs Trust van before (in a crate in the boot) but he whined and barked so therefore he was “bad to travel”.
I figured his first owner would have taken him places in the car, so tried to make it as normal as possible. He did destroy a couple of toys on the back seat but soon enough he was staring out the windows, excitably jumping around, smiling away and catching the breeze :) BEST DAY EVER.
He did smell my ear a couple of times to check it was me, but other than than seemed content to travel.
At this point I should probably mention I have 2 cats, brother and Sister about 2years old. They have seen dogs before, but have never lived with one. As they are really my first priority I need to keep them safe so I put them in one room as to adjust to the carnage of noises and smells they would eventually encounter....
I also put a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs, in an effort to keep Alfie downstairs only, and eventually open the cats domain so they can see him if they want to. After having a chat with Sabrina (The lady that looks after all fosterers) keeping him downstairs is supposed to make him more rehomable so wanted to try set some rules straight away..
ANYWAYS, I let him downstairs to explore... he was so happy!! Jumping around all the sofas, humping all the cushions... I set his bed up and scattered a few toys for him to destroy. I was given a sack of toys to keep him going a while in an aim to stop him ripping up more valuable items. Not that im precious about things, but I need to set up SOME boundaries at least.
The humping and jumping went on for about an hour. By the end of it he was exhausted and found a place on the sofa, totaally ignoring his bed, but fair enough. He didnt eat his dinner, but he did have a fair few treats so i wasnt worried.
As this being a new environment for him, I planned to spend his first night with him. Mainly for reassurance and of course to snuggle :) It had been too long a time for him since hes done that so, he deserved it.
For his evening walk he got all excited and grabby with the lead initially, but on the walk he didn’t grab the lead once. Nor did he ask for a toy :) perfect walker. He did go pee in my back garden, but hasn’t in the house...yet!
It became apparent when everyone started to go to bed (there are 4 of us in total) that he didn’t like people leaving. Even if people were still in the room with him. As soon as someone left he would pace and stress, whine. No distraction would change his focus, even calling his name or waving a treat in front of his face... after maybe half hour he did settle himself next to me.
All the new noises around him and movements through the house would startle him, although exhausted he is an extremely light sleeper!! Once the house was quiet ( i did keep the telly on to mask any outside noises) he fell fast asleep in my arms.
