A European turtle dove (Streptopelia turtur) in Yorkshire, UK
by Tim Melling
Today’s columbidae:
African Collared-Dove (Streptopelia roseogrisea)
Medium-sized, pale grayish-brown dove with brown primary wing feathers and a black crescent-shaped marking on the hindneck. Native to North Africa and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula, introduced to and established in Puerto Rico, New Zealand, and even some parts of North America. The wild ancestor of the domesticated Barbary Dove/ Ring-neck Dove. Very similar to the Eurasian Collared Dove; note that Eurasian Collared Doves are darker overall, have more black at the base of the undertail, and have darker primaries than the rest of the wing. The most distinctive feature is their voice, African Collared Doves have a trilling “oo-rrrrooo-oooo” call. Barbary doves also do this.
Eurasian Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), family Columbidae, order Columbiformes, Uttar Pradesh, India
