Pictures shows Strangles in a horse.
Strangles is caused by Streptococcus equi ssp. equi. The disease causes nasopharyngeal lymphadenopathy that can also infect the guttural pouch. A rare form of the disease "bastard strangles" presents when other deep lymph nodes in the chest, abdomen, and hindquarters become infected.
Horses are exposed to the bacteria by other infected horses or fomites (objects contaminated with the bacteria ie. buckets, halters, humans)
