Adieu to Street Running

This was taken along the Chicago, South Shore & South Bend Railroad in Michigan City, Indiana. For 120 years the railroad ran down the middle of 11th Street here.

I photographed it a few times back in the late-1970s and then again when I heard it would be double-tracked and this street running would be removed.

Surprising to realize it's been three years already since the final runs on the street. I'm thinking about returning to do shooting there once again to see how the new alignment compares.

Adieu to Street Running I have a small article coming out soon in Railway & Locomotive Historical Society’s Quarterly Newsletter. The piece is on the end street running in Michigan City, Indiana. The Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad had been doing so since 1908: while charming, this was not the safest of situations. The last revenue passenger service, running on the streets, was on 2-27-22.

Here is one of my five images in the article: this inbound train is negotiating the tight "S" curve that connects street running on 10th and 11th Streets—which will also be smoothed with this rebuilding of the line. These orange Pullman cars were built in 1926 and modified around 1945 or so; they would run until 1982 when new cars came on-line thanks to the creation of NICTD (Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District).

Unscheduled Movement

While waiting for my next scheduled train, I was surprised by another unscheduled move, this time a couple of GP38-2s rolling westward through town. I was set up at the east end of town for my long telephoto re-shoot with a prominent church steeple when I had to react and bag this light engine move.
