Hello! I’m Dylan Schwartz rom Cherry Hill, New Jersey. I’m currently a graduate student at the S.I. Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University working towards my Masters in Advertising. I want to gain the insight and practical skills in order to be successful in a career in advertising within the entertainment field. I felt that after my undergraduate experience at Muhlenberg College, where I graduated with a Bachelors in Media & Communications, I was not yet equipped with the knowledge and skills I needed to be successful in a professional advertising setting. I’m taking the Trendspotting in Digital Media course to not only be prepared for how emerging technologies such as AI will influence media and advertising, but also to provide me with the mental framework to continue throughout my career to keep ahead of trends and adapt to them quickly so as to promote my success and maintain my value in the industry.
Before coming to Newhouse, I was always fascinated in the field of media and entertainment. I’m interested in the evolution of streaming platforms l,ive streaming content (a.k.a. Twitch, Kick, YouTube Live) and the business behind it, and how this type of media has so quickly has become a core part of popular culture and how information is consumed today. During my academic experience, specifically my undergraduate, my eyes were opened to the complexity of our current media landscape through many courses such as Pop Culture and Media, Media & Society: Social Media, Global Media, and many others. For example, during Spring of 2024, I studied in Dublin and had the opportunity to work with a Dublin City University professor as a research assistant focusing on misinformation and disinformation in global and local Irish media, particularly with a focus on AI and its role of combatting it. In addition, my honors thesis analyzed how popular media with political commentary, such as the television show “The Boys”, contributes to polarization in online communities such as Reddit. During the Spring of 2025, I had the opportunity to intern under prominent American entrepreneur, media personality and Shark Tank judge, Daymond John, with his business development and branding agency The Shark Group as business development intern in Miami. During that internship, I supported the company’s team in daily operations by contributing to marketing strategy, research, and business development initiatives tied to the company’s various brands and products. I also conducted research over 20+ states of trade shows for Daymond and the team’s schedule for network and business opportunities. I also developed databases for influencer marketing and product seeding as well as retail activations for products with which our agency was currently working. These experiences overall provided me with the insight of the intersection media and business and how to apply this knowledge in my future career.
My current media focus in this course I want to discuss is live-streaming. While live-streaming is still niche at this point through platforms such as Netflix, Paramount +, ESPN+, YouTube Live, Twitch, Kick, etc., I feel the idea of providing real-time content and experiences in an accessible way still has many opportunities for growth and integration by many media companies. I want to be at the forefront of the growth and evolution of live streaming opportunities for business and widening its accessibility to consumers, particularly with the integration of AI. I believe there is still plenty of room for innovation in the media landscape in this field.
