Today's topic is...

Why the "They knew what they were doing" joke is the point of Red Lights

I've had this conversation with a friend of mine before but I just need to get fully into it.

So! What the hell do I mean? Well, let me explain.

SIDE NOTE: NONE OF THIS IS MEANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY, THIS IS JUST A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE/THEORY PLEASE DON'T KILL ME

We know from Chan explaining that the red lights mentioned in the song are supposed to be camera lights, the red showing the cameras rolling and needing to keep up the mask of an idol. The lyrics talking about not being able to escape and not being able to leave the listener alone while sounding sexy (because come on, it's Chan and Hyunjin) are actually desperate and begging for the listeners attention because they need it to survive. Because of all of their time acting for the camera and getting the attention of the audience, they've come to thrive on it and without it, they don't feel like they're worth anything.

The life of an idol is hard because it's based entirely on public opinion. If they lose popularity, the company can drop them and suddenly, they've lost everything. They're out of a job, out of a company, and out of possibly the only life they've ever known. So keeping their audience and holding onto their attention is of the utmost importance. This want, this need to stay relevant and stay in the forefront of their fans minds leads to a desperate obsession. And this shows in the lyrics, staying up all night (considering it's Chan it's probably to write lyrics because this man doesn't understand the concept of sleep), unable to run even if they wanted to because they can't stand the thought of being irrelevant and losing everything. The song is far sadder than we're led to believe by the sensual beat and melody and heavily distracting music video (Chan in monochrome is unfairly attractive) so you never think to look deeper and see the desperation under the innuendo.

So how does that relate back to the joke? Simple. It shows that it's working. Stays joke that "oh yeah, it's about red lights, sure Chan, whatever you say" and that if it was really about lights, why is the music video the way it is? (Okay but no seriously, why was the shibari rope necessary for this metaphor-) And that proves the vicious cycle. The cycle of needing to be attractive in order to keep the people's attention and in turn giving yourself up to become basically a fantasy. You stay in the game but what are you sacrificing? So the real feelings, the real concerns about becoming obsessed with the attention and needing it to feel whole get buried beneath layers of innuendo and metaphor in hopes that someone sees it. The red ropes seeming alluring but in reality all they're doing is pulling you in a thousand different directions until they tear you apart. And in the fandom not seeing the real story under the surface turns the wheel ever forward in this toxic creative cycle until the artist burns out in a heap of imposter syndrome and disassociation from reality.

Now am I saying any of this is the real meaning behind the song? No, absolutely not. It's Chan, it's just as likely I'm reading way too far into things and seeing something that doesn't exist. But at the same time, considering what we know of Chan's writing habits, maybe it's not as silly a theory as I think. Who knows.

Chat is it js me or am I the only one who thinks that skz should've won instead of bp at the vmas? Yes, blackpink worked hard too as soloists nd as a group,but skz worked even harder this year.(dominATE tour concerts, album preparations nd promotions,etc). Skz had a full length album fully produced by themselves, meanwhile bp released a single song throughout the entire year(produced by like 3-4 random producers)... Where's the fairness in that? The glaze some blinks give bp is crazy(not saying all blinks glaze them, it's not all of them).

He has such a pretty voice tbh,his vocals r lowkey underrated imo... nd lowk his rapping too(atleast whenever he raps🤷🏻‍♀️). I love him sosososoo so much,he was my first bias that I loved(nd still love) n cherish til this day<333💞💞💖💖

Chat am i normal if i js listened to skz for almost 2 hrs??... I think that's a personal record tbh🫡 i have a 5h 31min playlist n listened to almost 2 hrs of it w barely any skips(skz have no skips in their discography but i didn't feel like listening to the songs i skipped,which were very few🙏🏻)

Chat guess who got out of the hospital 2day ! I still have to take pills for about 2 weeks but it's alright ! Atleast I'm better now ! But I have 2 go again tomorrow for a check up😭😭 atleast I'm not getting hospitalized again, I would've gone insane. I missed sm skz content that I only now js watched it ( i had internet but most of the time it was sh!t+ i was w other ppl in the room 2 at one point)
