Rome - Vatican City
When we arrived in Rome we booked a half day tour to into the Vatican City. You can go into the Vatican City and explore yourself however, you will have to wait a very long time to get inside Vatican City museum, St Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. If you go with a tour guide you can by pass the line and get in straight away the down side with going with a tour guide is that they move quite quickly there is no time stop and look around. They show you the main things to see.
Matt and I go went on a tour guide and the line to get into Vatican City was crazy the line would just go around the city wall. The area was very busy so I made sure my bag was close to me and that was focus following my guide because there were many tourist guide operating in the area. Our first stop was the Vatican Museum which basically the church’s art collection. The building itself was quite epic it was basically like a palace. If you didn’t go with a guide you would have the freedom to walk around and explore the whole museum which could take the whole day but with a tour guide with followed the most common route. These hallways were full of people moving you could not stop or take photos. I couldn’t take as many photos I would have liked. We some Italian master piece by grand masters/craftsmanship the likes of Raphael, Michelangelo, Di Vinci, Carravaggio and more.
After the museum the route naturally led us to Sistine Chapel. We were not allowed to take photos in the Sistine Chapel. The paintings on the roof were restored and they were very vivid. There were lots of details which honestly I could not take it all in. There was too much to see and at the same I wasn’t able to process it all in. I remembered the feeling being there I was excited and marvelled by the talent of these paintings. I had seen a lot of this stuff online but it felt so surreal to see it in real life and be in the building that the once great Michelangelo was in gave me the tingles.
The Sistine Chapel was connected to the St Peter’s Basilica. I could be wrong but I was told that this is the biggest Catholic church in the world. If you want to see one church in your whole life this would be the church you should go and see. It has a grand ceiling. There were many tomb stones of popes buried within the church. Some have big marble statues. There were many mosaics of images and if you looked it from the distant it looked like they were painted but actually they were made of tiny coloured tiles. The amount of attention that was put into some these art pieces were immense. The church itself was made of marble. I was told that Peter, Jesus’ disciple, was buried inside the church where the alter was. Not sure, how true that was but that was what I was told by tour guide. I am not a religious person but I do admire art and culture that was one of the reason I visited places like St Peter’s Basilica and many other churches in Europe.
St Peter’s Basilica has a roof top were you could get view of the Vatican City. You have to go up a flight of stairs that took around 30 minutes to get to the top. Vatican City was not a big city at all you can see the whole see from there.
We also walked the square in front of St Peter’s which was were the Pope would normally address his followers and do mass.

They said this place is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic shrines and the greatest lf all churches of Christendom. - Sadly, IMHO, it feels more like a touristic place than a holy church.
