So, I’m caught up on Star Twinkle now. We know Blue Cat’s real name (Yuni), Eyewan might be getting a redemption arc, and Darknest has taken on corporeal form (Cobra called, they want Serpentor back). And.... we got a new ending song! That’s what I’m really here to talk about. STPC ending 1 was a fantastic techno-bop. This song isn’t quite as upbeat, and the lyrics have me scratching my head (it’s asking things like “Where do people come from? Why is 1+1=2? Nobody will tell me! There’s so many things I don’t understand!”). It also commits the cardinal sin of overly focusing on Star, Milky, and Cosmo at the expense of Selene and Best Girl Soleil (y’all know I like my yellow cures). Those two only get one or two focus shots while more emphasis is placed on our pink (I mean, duh) and the two aliens. I get it but it’s also sad. The animation and dance choreography are cool, and I like the bit where Star goes to hug a heart and falls (oh god that sounds mean). The CG dance endings are getting better and better every year, this level of detail and choreography wouldn’t have been possible when they started doing CG dances in Fresh. They still do that thing that’s bugged me since Dokidoki where the girls are lipsyncing as though they’re singing the song, but there’s only one vocalist on the track, that throws me off every time and I don’t like it, but it’s not a big deal. The big thing is the song itself. It’s good, but it doesn’t grab me like the first ending did. But that’s not a knock on the show, here’s looking forward to a great second half.... and seeing how Yuni fits in on Earth, since she can’t disguise her ears or tail.
