🌸I struggle as a writer when it comes to editing my work. I couldn't seem to make my words do what they wanted them to do, and the struggle was slowing my progress as I worked to finish my first draft. 🌸⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So I got some advice. And this is what she told me: Stop editing as you write. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The purpose of a first draft is to get the story in your head down on paper. That's it. It doesn't need to be pretty, and you don't get ~bonus writer points~ if it is. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Think of your first draft as a baby. A baby isn't ready to go out into the world on its own, so there's little point in dressing it up like it's about to go on a date or apply for a job. Chances are that thing is going to spit up on itself, and then what? Now the fancy clothes you've dressed it in are useless.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you want to raise your baby right, then let it be a baby. Prepare for the messes and the smells. Prepare to hold its hand, to scold it, teach it, train it up to be the type of grown-up you want it to be.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Is this metaphor getting weird? Yeah... enough of that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Point is: Let your first draft be a first draft. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There's no point in polishing words that could very well end up on the cutting room floor come draft two. Focus instead on getting your story out of your head, then focus on making your story the best it can be. Then and only then should you worry about polishing up your words to share with the world.
