Scream Queen - Kathleen Kinmont
HOW HAVE I NEVER DONE THIS
Tumblr, sea witches, mermaid-kins, mer souls, WHOEVER
If you can, please read the Ingo Chronicles by Helen Dunmore. I highly recommend. I will be re-blogging images, info, whatever I can find to promote these books because they honestly are the best mermaid series GOING. You know that book series you absolutely LOVED growing up and you’d always read them during the summer or your favourite season or whathaveyou? And that magic never went away and you’re always amazed each time you read them and you get lost in the story? WELL THIS IS THE INGO CHRONICLES. And there’s a sassy, funny merman named Faro I mean really what more could you want?
These are the books: Ingo The Tide Knot The Deep The Crossing of Ingo Stormswept
Sidenote, the books are LOOSELY based on the Cornish legend, “The Mermaid of Zennor.” And the detailing and the lore and the characters of THESE BOOKS AHHH okay. I love love love this series and I’ve been spending the best part of my fall/early winter re-reading them and honestly it’s just the freaking best! <3

THE RAIN HAD BEEN particularly heavy that day. Unexpected and sudden, like the heavens burst at its seams piercing every raincloud. It’s like the sky is throwing a tantrum, high winds and rain beating on every surface in its path, determined to make its presence known. Ichika’s umbrella didn’t stand a chance against this kind of weather, and it decides to give into the storm midway on her journey. Her favorite cat patterned umbrella exclaims its last ‘POOF’ as the canopy inverts, making her stumble from the sudden jerk. A part of wants to mourn its loss, a rare limited edition umbrella that she had waited hours in line to get left in shambles, but there isn’t any time to waste. She’s already late for her meeting with Yanagi.
Through the grayness and cascades of rain, she can make out the building and the ‘X-Day’ graffiti painted across the aluminum shutters of the closed store beneath the detective agency. It’s like a beacon of hope in a cold world drowning in rain and she dashes into the building and up the stairs.
“I’m here!” she practically bursts through the doors, looking very much like part of the storm herself, dark bangs slicked against her cheeks, rivulets of water snaking their way down the sides of her face, and her umbrella, rather what’s left of it creaks and dribbles a puddle onto the doormat.
Ichika spots Yanagi just as he steps into the office from the kitchen, lavender hues widened as he takes in the sight of her and the expression on his face jolts her thoughts back to reality. Droplets of water drip from the tip of her nose and she doesn’t need to look at herself in a mirror to know that she’s a mess. Emerald eyes glance down at her water logged boots, slips them off quickly, though her clothes are still soaked and it does little to help stop the growing puddle beneath her feet. Ichika bites the side of her bottom lip, red paints her cheeks at the sudden embarrassment—she’s surprised she’s not dripping red paint on the wooden floors. Her hands curl tightly around her umbrella and the bag she holds, shopping bag plastic crunching beneath nervous fingers. “I’m sorry I’m late Yanagi-san!” a shift bow, sending more droplets to bead and trickle down her face, “I-I got caught in the rain.” Real smooth Ichika—perhaps next she should tell him something he doesn’t already know.
