Fairy Series: The Storm Fairy Grandma

She comes with the lightning.

Another month, another Tezuka Kickstarter! Not that I’m complaining in any way. I just recently got around to reading the previously Kickstarted Atom Cat and loved it. Up next: Storm Fairy. 

DMP’s new Kickstarter aims to publish one of Osamu Tezuka’s shojo works this time around. What is shojo? I’ll let them explain:

Shojo is a type of genre born in Japanese magazines that were segregated according to gender. Shonen and shojo was printed similarly like the funnies in your Sunday newspaper. Magazines aimed at boys created the genre shonen, magazines aimed at girls created shojo. Post-WWII showed a surge of girls interested in manga, and when Tezuka published Princess Knight, he raised the bar on what was acceptable for Japanese girls (at the time) could read.

Storm Fairy is made up of three stories, the first a drama about stolen identity and an imposter to the throne, the second about a mystery-solving girl and her canine companion, and the third abut a shape shifting fairy.

After the successful funding of FOUR books in their last Kickstarter, DMP has included two stretch goals for this campaign. The first is a reprinting of a previously Kickstarted title Unico, a book about the cutest unicorn you’ve ever seen. For those who missed the previous opportunity, like myself, this is a very welcome offering, especially with the improved paper quality. The second stretch goal is a printing of Crime and Punishment, a title which was previously released digitally. Like Brave Dan from the previous campaign, C&P was released on DMP’s website first, before being offered to print.

The campaign overview is as follows:

$14,200 for Storm Fairy  - which is all but guaranteed only three days in

$26,000 for Unico reprint - which would give us a $11,800 ‘campaign’ for Unico, which seems very doable.

$27,000 for a HIGHER QUALITY set of Unico images for the reprint. $1,000

$32,500 for Crime and Punishment - which if Unico is funded, gives us a $5,500 campaign for C&P, probably the smallest of the Tezuka campaigns so far.

This campaign is asking $20 for a print copy of Storm Fairy.

The previous Unico campaign had a price of $35 for the print copy.

The price of a digital copy of Crime and Punishment on emanga is $10, so assume $15 for print.

This gives us a total PROBABLE cost of $70 for all three books if all the goals are met. Which sounds pretty good to me! If I remember correctly last campaign I snagged four books for $90.

In addition to the print books, there are plenty of other things being offered such as shirts, posters, dresses and some Tezuka collectibles.
