Hi there, I came across a post you made from 2020 about the pronunciation of 19 Days chars' names and it made me curious about other name/language related stuff for the series. Would you say MGS has a weird or unique name? I know a little Mandarin but not enough to tell what's a weird/normal/etc name. I've heard people say all the main cast have weird names but MGS in particular stands out. Having your name mean Don't Close Mountain does seem especially "????"
Thanks for your ask! I asked a Chinese friend since Iām not Chinese and I donāt want to make assumptions, and she said that sheās never met someone with the last name Mo, let alone a Guan Shan! I live in an area populated by a lot of international Chinese students, and itās the same for me. Surnames like He, Jian, and Zhan are very common, but I havenāt met an A-Yi or Zheng Xi. I have met a lot of A-Tians though! I wouldnāt think his name is confusing or strange because of an English translation though, as a lot of names that are average in other languages are strange when translated.
tl;dr: I think that encountering the first and last names of the characters have varying levels rarity, however, the surname Mo and the name Guan Shan are both pretty unique!

I like the life in your sentences. Anyone could write sentences that are just a... list of events that happen. -John snuck into the building. He was nervous. He snuck into the vault. Then he stole the diamond.- Not you though. You write with intense emotion and description that I feel like I can sink into. Grabs my attention and keeps it every time. I haven't read your other words because I'm not into Marvel. But anything you write in the future in any fandom I know, I'll be there.
Excuse me just a sec... just gotta breathe a bit. š³š³š³
Thank you. Thank you so much, that means a lot. I sometimes think I get too carried away, and itās hard to know when Iāve put things in that just donāt belong in the moment. My mind jumps a lot and itās like I have to get everything down before I digress into something else. Itās the equivalent of staring at a plate of food and knowing youāve got five seconds to partake before itās taken away, and you get the next dish. I have to get it down fast, or I know I wonāt write anything at all.
It can feel like a mess sometimes, and I can only hope I make sense. Iām very lucky, I have readers like yourself who keep me on my tightrope instead of falling through the air, and youāre very good at making sure I know when something can be tweaked or if it doesnāt read right, which I do very much appreciate.
I havenāt posted anything for Marvel, so you may have stumbled across my bookmarks, but Iāll let you know if inspiration strikes for any new fandoms. I think at the moment, I have so much planned for this one that it will be a long time before I get to that point though, so thereās that.
Aaaaaaand, thereās the little cubic Cloud in my head threatening me with violence for even contemplating writing Sefikura...
@stormears: (I donāt care if you answer this publicly, it might be interesting to other users anyway, so go ahead)
Since you seem knowledgeable about FF7 and even Crisis Core, I thought I would try out a Crisis Core question on you. One kinda silly aesthetic thing and one about a CC character in the fandom.
I have NOT played Crisis Core, or the OG game, but I am open to spoilers. I feel like no matter what I learn, if Remake Part 2 is anything like Remake Part 1, there will be fun and surprises even if I know the story front to back.Ā Ā
So, I have NOT played Crisis Core and was wondering a few things about it. I saw a YT vid summarizing it a while back. It probably has no significance,Ā but is there a reason or even a point in time when Sephiroth and Genesis started wearing their unique black and red coats instead of soldier uniforms? Iāve seen fanart of them and Angeal all wearing SOLDIER uniforms and hanging out as friends. From what I remember in the video, itās not clear/I just donāt remember, if the three are actual FRIENDS or just friendly coworkers so to speak, who hang around each other because they are so far beyond the abilities and influence of other military men around them that they donāt relate to or interact with them.
But anyway, all three wearing the uniform may just be a fun fanon thing and perhaps Genesis and Sephiroth were never portrayed wearing it in canon, ever. The answer could simply be that the black coat is how Sephiroth was designed in the mid 90s so thatās all he ever wore, and the red coat is what they designed Genesis with in the mid 00ās so thatās all HE ever wore, and thatās that! But Iād be interested to know if my assumption is wrong, and they canonically were dismissing the standard uniform, and got away with wearing what they wanted because no one around them had the authority or balls to tell them what clothes to wear.Ā
Next, if you played CC around the time it was new,Ā do you think you can describe the fandom perception of Genesis?Ā Because I first found a vague description of who he was, saw some cool fanart of him, and THEN came across YT comments about his poetry-reading and how he was a copy-paste design of a celebrity at the time who PAID to have his freaking face in an FF game and likeā¦I get the impression people are annoyed by him or hate him or find him cringe-worthy and am afraid to dig deeper.Ā Yes I will form my own opinion but I definitely feel some secondhand embarrassment for liking this guy okay and then getting this vibe that heās hated on.Ā
Thank you very much for taking the time to read my lengthy, non-shallow questions of ādid Sephiroth wear a tanktopā and ādo people besides me like the hot, poetry-spewing fire wizardā :)Ā
Goodness, what a question! Hmm⦠Itās been a while for me with Crisis Core, but I believe in the actual game, all we know for sure is that Angeal and Genesis grew up in the same town. So we can assume theyāre fairly close, but whether or not the two are actually friends with Sephiroth or just friendly co-workers I think is up for interpretation. With the focus so firmly on Zackās POV, we donāt really see too much of their dynamic in-game.
Re: the costumes: Thereās never a point where we see Sephiroth wearing the SOLDIER-issue tanktop and shoulder pauldrons (though his coat has pauldrons) but you can probably assume he wore one once upon a time, since he still wears the harness under the coat. I always headcanoned that the coat became his uniform as the General/war hero during the Wutai war, and the leather was so hot he took off the tanktop and never bothered to put it back on. (Definitely the actual reason is because Nomura designed his costume way back in 1997, and itās become so iconic they didnāt want to change it for the prequel.)Ā
Iām not sure if thereās a canon story behind Genesisā coat. Since heās got a rivalry with Sephiroth, it wouldnāt surprise me if he was designed with it to hint at that rivalry between them. Under the coat, though, heās wearing a typical SOLDIER Firstās uniform without the pauldrons. The cross-strapped harness and higher boots seem to be an alternate provided option for the SOLDIER First uniform; both he and Sephiroth wear the same.
As for the fandom perception of Genesis: Genesis first showed up as a cameo in a secret ending in Dirge of Cerberus, presumably to either tease a sequel game or be a cute in-joke between folks who knew Gackt had composed Dirge of Cerberusā ending song. They used Gacktās likeness for the in-joke. One of the producers really liked the character design, though, so when they decided to make Crisis Core instead of a Before Crisis port for the PSP, they asked Gackt if heād be up for acting out Genesis in the prequel story. Gackt was all about it, and contributed a lot of creative ideas to the character.
A lot of FF fans dislike Genesis for the same reason any new prequel character gets hate: heās not who they want to see. Itās like if you made a prequel series to Star Wars, introduced Anakin Skywalker, and then spent most of the story talking about a trade war until the last five minutes where suddenly Darth Vader happens. Genesisā story copies a lot from Sephirothās, and the focus the game puts on him means we donāt get more time on things we really want to see: like Sephirothās descent into madness, or Zack and Cloudās friendship both before and after Hojo. And he shows up during *scary music* Nibelheim, which is just blasphemy. We know how Nibelheim goes, and no poetry-spouting dramatic french man was at that party. ;) (People were pissed about Last OrderĀ changing things up, and that anime didnāt even have any new characters.)
(And yeah, some folks donāt like the poetry.)
Genesis has definitely got his share of fans, though. There are plenty of folks out there who find him just as hot and likable as you do ā and you should never be embarrassed about what you like! Feel free to squee and gush over him as much as you want. Youāve got plenty of company!
stormears replied to your post: *squints* why does this pickle have no calories
Read somewhere that in the USA, if a serving of food has less than 10 calories, the packaging is allowed to say āzero caloriesā even if, technically, the food has say, 7 or whatever
Hello! I'm a new fan of your art. I recently got back into Haikyuu after my brother got me to watch Season 3 that I missed a few years back, DOVE into the fandom and happily found your beautiful works. My favorite so far is your "Imaginary Haikyuu video game" poster done for an HQ fantasy zine last year. I was wondering, are/will you ever sell prints of that piece? It's so visually engaging with strong colors and so many pieces in it that I'd love to have a copy of it in my hands if I could.
aww, that FHQ game poster is one of my favorites too... i had a lot of fun trying to squeeze in all these tiny details! i drew the originalĀ picture at about A4 size thinking i would make prints later, though i have to figure out the best way to be able to ship them first! but thanks for inquiring, iāll look into prints again now that i know peeps might be interested in them :>
hiya! yes, iāve got a bag of extra kenmas waiting for parts for my next restock + a handful that are up in the shop right now. iād say thereās probably no issue with waiting til the next opening.

Hello! I'm a new fan of your art and had a question about your art prints. I'm really enamored with two pieces you drew that were called "(demon) king and lionheart." The post has a link to prints at Society6, but your page on that site does not have any art pieces shown at all. I checked the Redbubble and Inprnt links on your desktop sidebar and the pieces are not there either. I have to ask, is there any way to purchase prints of those two pieces?
i had a little problem with s6 and stopped selling prints there. iāll be putting some old artwork on inprnt soon including the demon/lionheart one, thanks so much for liking my art!!
Hello Elumish, do you have any advice for putting some life and interest into an extended action/fight scene? I have two bitter, hateful rival characters fighting each other in an empty city and all other context/info aside, I am very confused/irritated at how often my sentences are like "he did X" or "the X happened to him." So much he, him, he him, even with occasional sentences pointing out the environment around them or their damaging it. How to make this scene less monotonous?
I was a few days off in my estimate of answering this, but Iām finally getting around to it.
There seem to be basically two questions here: how to write long fight scenes, and how to avoid monotony.
Regarding the first question, fight scenes are definitely not my expertise, but particularly if youāre going to have a long/plot important fight scene, you really want to know what exactly is going to be happening, or you can end up with the fanfiction sex scene issue where characters have 5 hands and 3 mouths and are touching too many places at once.
Depending on how much theyāre going to be moving, you may want to sketch out a map of where everything is before you start writing it. Where are the civilians, where are the obstacles, where will they be moving when. This can help you avoid the issue of contradicting yourself or losing track of whatās going on.
Before you start, writing out weapons, injuries, possibly even hits, can help a lot. You should know where theyāre bleeding from, how much blood theyāve lost, what injuries will keep them from fighting as well. You should also know how each weapon works, what they can do with each one, etc.
This may all seem like a lot of work, but itās a lot easier to do it before you start than to try to figure it out as you go.
What you want to do then is figure out how long and how much is enough. If you think of it as a movie, how much more does a 20-minute car chase give the viewer than a 2-minute car chase? What does your reader get from the 30th paragraph of action that they didnāt get from the 15th? And keep in mind that a lot of fighting is really energy-intensive and most people likely arenāt going to be able to fight for long periods of time, particularly once they start getting injured. People donāt want to fight for a long time, and incapacitating someone with a joint lock or kicking in their knee is more advantageous than trying to land--and taking--a dozen hits.
Dialogue can help break up a long action sequence, as can thoughts. Show your character reacting, show them planning, show them making their next decision. Fighting shouldnāt be all thinking, particularly if itās fast up-close hand-to-hand combat, but if itās going to be a long scene, there should be some strategy or something beyond just kicks and punches.
I suggest looking at @howtofightwrite for specifics for whatever type of fighting youāre planning on doing, as they have a lot of great posts about basically every type of fighting and weapons you can think of.
Regarding making the scene less monotonous, one of the biggest ways to prevent that is varying your sentence structure. You can also use sentence fragments as a way to indicate faster or more disjointed thinking. Longer sentences can show a more extended sequence, while shorter sentences or sentence fragments can show more abrupt actions or thoughts.
You can also think about what other than actions you can describe. Does a bullet strike a concrete wall, sending a chip of concrete slicing across the characterās face? Does the sun get in their eyes? Is there a civilian who screams from a nearby window? Things donāt happen in isolation, and you should think not just about how they impact the environment but how the environment impacts them.
If you liked HitsuRuki, I have to wonder if you read the HitsuRuki fanfics by BlackBelt back in like, 2008-09. She was a big name for both Sakura-centric fics in the Naruto fandom, and boosting popularity for HitsuRuki. As far as I was aware at the time, that ship's fandom only existed because she wrote a giant, popular fic for it. Her hype about the ship even it inspired me to do a HitsuRuki fic too. Mostly garbage, I'm sure, it was a decade ago, but her influence/popularity was that big.
OH. MY GOD.
Are you talking about Conversing the Dragon? Holy shit. That fic changed my fucking life. I adored it when I read it for the first time⦠itās been years, but yeah, that was a huge reason why I liked HitsuRuki so much.
So glad you mentioned this. Wow. Itās been so long.Ā
