What is it that Kel said she did? Pretend to be a river? No, that's not right -- something about stone, maybe. That sounded closer, but whatever it is, Neal's decidedly not able to achieve that same meditative tranquility when he needs to. Perhaps he should ask her to teach him; if it worked in the presence of Joren, surely it might be of some use. 

The problem is he hasn't done any of that yet, so he's forced to sit and endure this without an unlimited store of patience. If they bump elbows or he's swatted away from turning the page one more time --

But that was other people. Asha just wasn't good with magic. Her family kept several teachers around, to teach the gifted children of the household, and Asha had learned to dread her tutoring sessions with them. She had to exert far more effort than her relatives for the simplest spells. When it came to Seeing, she only got the vaguest hints and images, and that's when she ended up seeing anything at all. Her attempts at healing were just as likely to make the injury worse, and her shields did exactly nothing.

Her Gift was so minuscule, so irrelevant, that she had hoped the Duke would just decide it was best not to teach her at all. But no, like all the other pages with the Gift, Asha would have to learn how to use it.

The girl tried not to drag her feet as she was escorted to the office of the chief mage, tried not to slouch her shoulders or let her annoyance show. Maybe he would see, upon meeting her, how pointless it was. He would realize how utterly untalented Asha was, and he would tell the Duke, and Asha wouldn't have to take any more magic classes for the rest of her life.
