We love 1980s style - but what makes it such an amazing decade for fashion?
Fashion changed enormously from the early part of the decade to the late part of the decade but one thing stood out - the influence of the "Me" generation on big clothes, big designs, big price labels and BIG shoulder pads!
Even in everyday wear this Jane Shaffhausen beautifully draped dress had shoulder pads inset into the shoulders. They got everywhere!

All through the decade more was more. More colour, more diversity and more hair. Think Madonna in 'Desperately Seeking Susan'. Hair was big, messy and a statement all by itself.
If your fashion tribe was leisurewear, you'd dress head to toe in the new lycra fashions that were inspired by the craze for working out.
If you were a professional woman you'd wear fashions that matched the man in your life. Tailored clothes like this high quality black and sheer shirt would be teamed with a suit by day.
This one doesn't have shoulder pads but it is ultra sexy and made for the new cocktail bars that sprang up in the financial districts. You'd head there after you'd made your million during the day.
This shirt looks like you had loadsamoney whether your purse was empty or not.

What about everyday clothes for the everyday woman?
During the 80s British retailer Marks and Spencers became the UK 'go-to' store because the designers got the mix of high fashion and everyday right. This dress is no exception.

Made from big multi-colored checks and with a drop waist, it took the boxy shapes made famous by designer Issey Miyake and translated it for the British high street.

They did the same with this on-trend bright cerise shirt with the clever design borrowed from the 60s across the shoulders and bodice. This would look great with jeans or a skirt, its flexible even today!
