The more time passes, the more I think Lenore Dove's death should have been on the gallows.
The whole symbolism with the hanging tree song, the situation where Dove sabotaged a hanging when she was younger and the fact that she was on the prison... Everything was making me believe that either I was going to see her hanged or her body would already be there when Haymitch arrived.
Lenore Dove would never last long in a place like D12. Even Haymitch knew that. She doesn't sit idly by with the wrong things in the world. She fights until the end.
Her being poisoned seems like she only died because Haymitch sabotaged the arena. I don't know. It takes away some of Dove's autonomy as a character outside of a relationship with Haymitch.
I think that's why the scene of the house catching fire was so much more memorable for me. Sid and Ma they die in each other's arms, inside the house where they should be safe.
Dove's death is just missing something. It's kind of random. Haymitch had already had his goodbye with Dove in the phone scene. It seems strange that they've met again.
