The original plate was a photo etch with greyscale manipulation & xxx. However prints were quite bland visually (lacked tonal variation).
The first step was to etch the surrounds (10-12 mins in 12:1) with an aquatint. This gave a deep black. To keep this - and prevent an open bite - it was nec to stop-out the area when etching the soft ground applied to the 'paper pieces'.
The area of the paper pieces was first coated with an aquatint. Ofc this was prolly affected by the application of the of ground due to the heat but nec to give added tonal range.
