After is supposed to be a beautiful story where love can conquer anything. What's really going on in this "beautiful" story? Rape culture, substance abuse, psychological and emotional abuse, and drug abuse.

Rape Culture

1.

Harry takes Tessa to a lake and while they are there, they decide to become horny teenagers and mess around. While Harry is pleasuring Tessa, he asks her if he should let her finish and Tessa's IMMEDIATE thought is he doesn't have to ask, my shaking body and hitched breath should give it away.

First: NO NO NO NO!!! A man SHOULD ASK! If he wants to call himself a man he should ask.

Second: If any girl was shaking and had hitched breath, if we followed Anna's logic, any guy can jump in. No. A true gentleman SHOULD ask to touch you.

Tessa was drunk and after a huge fight with Harry (let's be honest, this is their billionth fight) she wants to have sex. Shocker. Not really. Harry is telling her no. Clearly he is saying NO and she's not listening! This is sexual assault!!! See image below.

 Because he is hard for her, even though he says no for her sake, she still forces sex upon him. This is WRONG! NO ONE NO MATTER WHAT GENDER YOU ARE THIS IS WRONG! THIS IS ASSAULT AND YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO STAND STRONG TO YOUR NO! DO NOT CAVE IN BECAUSE THEY ARE FORCING IT UPON YOU. LEAVE THE ROOM, GET OUT OF THERE!

Tessa's best friend Steph drugs her and takes her into a room. Inside this room is a guy, Steph's boyfriend, Steph, ,Molly (a girl Tessa hates) and a video camera. They force her clothes off and Molly runs out, getting Zayn (a romantic interest for Tessa when she left Harry one time). Without Zayn becoming the hero, Tessa would have been raped.

No where near, inside, or on the chapter did Todd give advice on how to avoid date rape drugs. Here is how you can prevent that- click on section 8.

Substance Abuse

1.

Harry wants Tessa to leave him, he said she deserves better and Tessa gets mad that he decides to stay without her and she runs off to find her! How exciting. She finds Harry sitting around smoking weed and doing other drugs and decides to drag Harry out into the hall. Harry punches a wall super close to Tessa's head and she leaves. Harry then starts on a downward spiral into alcohol, drugs and sex. This only fuels into Todd's plot of a horrible man Harry is and how she can try to fix him.

2. 

At the age 18, sure someone is bound to get drunk at a college party, but EVERY OTHER CHAPTER? MY GOODNESS, BY NOW SHE NEEDS A LIVER TRANSPLANT!!! This is something that is problematic in the story. At the beginning of the story Harry says he doesn't drink, near the end of the third, we have Harry so drunk he burns a house down and let's his father take the fall. After has no consequences. They have sex constantly- Tessa's not pregnant. Harry burns down a house- gets away with it and his father only gets a few months in jail for arson- the max you can get (in New York) is a year. I feel that SETTING A WHOLE HOUSE ON FIRE WITH GAS AND ALCOHOL DESERVES MORE THAN A FEW MONTHS SITTING IN A CELL!

Abuse

1.

Abuse is a common theme in After. Click here for definitions, examples, and ways to get help. Harry manipulates Tessa into signing. Here is definitions and other examples. In After, Harry makes a bet on Tessa's virginity. The bet was to see who would get it first: Zayn or Harry. Harry obviously won and he entrapped her into staying with him by having her sign the lease for their apartment so she can't get out until the contract was up, so if she ever found out about the bet she was trapped.

2.

Multiple times Harry is putting Tessa down and he apologizes for it. Tessa hurts from it and Harry says it at the wrong time. This is abuse.
