Maybe Dean's investigating a case and trying to interview a witness (at this point Sam's in college and Dad's gone wherever the Hell Dad goes when he leaves) and he can tell pretty much two seconds in that the guy's so bombed he can't trust anything the guy's going to say.

So instead he kind of just shoots the shit and gets a nice contact high and it puts him in a really good mood despite the failed day, and the guy's nice enough and super mellow and he's really envious of the fact that the guy literally saw a guy get eviscerated and is still chill and hell.

So when the monster's ganked maybe he goes back asking to try it and they just spend hours in the guy's basement blazing up and Dean's never felt so freakin relaxed in his life.

Or maybe he tries it even earlier when he's waiting for Sam to come out of school somewhere and he catches this scent like old cat piss and follows it around the back of the library to where a bunch of seniors are lighting up and says he won't tell the principal if they share their joints.

And it becomes a kind of tradition when Sam's staying late to study that Dean will meet up for another bit of stash and when he gets home he sneaks out to the park or wherever the cool kids go to light up once he's sure Sam is loaded and asleep and he stays out until three am at the local Denny's eating anything he can get his hands on.
