My mother's father was a leading stoker in the Navy in WW2, I'm trying to find out more about it. From things I am reading it must have been the hardest job... Grandad, like many men, didn't like talking about the war as it was too horrific to have to dig up to retell. But he survived two ship sinkings in the Indian Ocean. I think one may have been HMS Cornwall. Survivors spent 30 hours in the water before they were rescued.
Firemen aka Stokers on any large ocean liner worked in the belly of the ship & were responsible for keeping the boilers fueled & the steam pressure up. This would have been the hardest job on Titanic or any other ocean liner of that era.
