5632 meets Morning Zephyr by steve55126 Via Flickr: On Oct. 3, 1964, the late photographer A. Robert Johnson of Eau Claire was out chasing CB&Q 4-8-4 No. 5632. Unlike so many photographers, Johnson did not give up at the end of steam but kept shooting diesels. Case in point: at Stoddard, Wis., the 5632 meets train No. 21, the westbound Morning Zephyr from Chicago. From the looks of the shot Johnson is the only person bothering to shoot the meet. The steam train is a short ferry move back and forth between La Crosse and Stoddard for the La Crosse Octoberfest. No. 5632 is almost breathing her last, it will go to Kansas City in November 1964 for the anniversary of Union Station, then head back to Galesburg and never run again. It was scrapped in a financial dispute in 1976. Looking at this shot, wouldn't you have loved to have been standing next to Johnson on what looks to be a perfect fall day?
