Scenes That I Want Part 1
Hey, don’t know if I’m actually going to make this a series, but you never know.
If I do, these are going to be little narratives of things I wish that we had/will gotten/get to see in RWBY. To note, I’m incredibly biased. Okay, lets get this started with:
The Adjustable Cane
So, as I’m sure everyone noticed (totally not just me) when passing from the Headmaster to Oscar, the cane remained proportionately sized to its wielder, remaining at about waist-height.
Naturally, we can take from this that the cane is in fact adjustable, which makes sense for a weapon expected to be used by multiple people of differing body-types and ages.
What about it?
Well, what I would have liked to see, was a scene where either Ozpin or Qrow helps Oscar adjust it to suit his height. Simple, mundane even, but I feel it could have a lot of potential.
Let me paint a picture for you. We’re at the house in Mistral, Oscar’s doing his first training session, with Ozpin, and Qrow. Things aren’t going well. He’s getting frustrated, keeps tripping over the cane and himself, nothing is going his way. Because this is hard. He has no proper training for this, he’s only just started and whatever muscle memory Ozpin keeps saying is going to kick in hasn’t yet.
Aggravated, doubting himself and everything to do with what he’s now signed up for, he goes off on a little tirade, trying to gesticulate with the cane in hand but a swing has it unexpectedly smacking off the ground, knocking it out of Oscar’s hand which has him about to storm out.
But this clicks with one of the adults, and they’re like ‘wait, wait, of course this isn’t going well!’ and point out that the cane is waaay too long for Oscar. He’s a little indignant to this, afterall he hasn’t hit his growth spurt yet, but it at least reduces him to more of a pout than outright anger as either Oz or Qrow help to instruct him on how to adjust the length of the cane.
Now, I like this scene for a couple of reasons. First off, I feel it could be a really good establishment of where Oscar is starting off, just how far he needs to go in order to even catch up to the rest of the students. His sparring scene with Ruby was cute (and I’m not saying this would replace it at all, keep that in) but its already a few weeks in, and it would have been really cool to see where Oscar is starting in order to compare it to where he eventually ends up skill-wise.
Secondly, it could really help to establish Oscar’s mentorship with Ozpin and Qrow. Ever since joining up with the group, Oscar and Ozpin’s back and forth has been reduced to a few words here and there and I think it would have been cool to see Oscar’s emotional fallout after realizing that the voice in his head was real. A scene like this could really show how well he is/n’t coping with it. Furthermore, from what we can tell, it seemed that Oscar spent most of his time either with Qrow or alone with Ozpin though we didn’t really get to see any of that. I would kill for some Qrow and Oscar training moments. It could be fantastic for building their characters, especially Oscar.
Third, with Oscar dealing with his new situation, him getting to interact with the cane, learn how to adjust the inner mechanisms, change it even in such a small way, this could symbolically be such a big thing for him taking on this heirloom and by extension, the responsibility that comes with it, as his own. Add to it him giving it a practice swing after and brightening up cause ‘hey, that’s actually not bad’ could be a great little hopeful note to end on.
I just think it could have been such a cute little moment for them, a good little kickstarter to Oscar’s training arc.
