Te Puka A Maui. MAUI is a legendary voyager from Polynesia, endowed with God-like abilities. This gigantic sculptural piece draws from one of his legends: how he brought Rakiura (Stewart Island) up from the bottom of the sea to be the anchor rock (Te Puka A Maui) for his canoe (Te Waka A Maui or the South Island). Thus anchored, he was able to catch the giant fish (Te Ika A Maui, or the North Island). This installation in Bluff is complemented by the other end of the shackled chain on Rakiura, seemingly connected beneath Foveaux Strait.
