After this post about the frescoes in the triclinium at Pompeii crossed my dash today, I was bopping around the internet just reading about triclinia in general (as you do). And I started stumbling on images (both early and modern) and descriptions/diagrams of the Last Supper on triclinia or stibadia because OF FREAKING COURSE.
And suddenly, just like that, after all these decades of ignorance, the passage about John leaning on Jesus's chest finally makes perfect sense, because that's how you recline when you're eating triclinium-style, and it's not awkward like it would be if you were sitting up to table at a Protestant church social.
