Sonic the Hedgehog (1993) [Ben's Vision]
This post is a continuation of my Epilogue entry for Sonic the Hedgehog (1993). Ben's Vision was a great watch. As expected, the documentary was amazing. I had no idea there was this much behind-the-scenes history to this series. I've only heard small things here and there, but to learn the full timeline and concepts was what I needed to fully appreciate the series. The visualizations were great, too. Ben Hurst sounds like he was an amazing writer and person all around, based on this video. He would've been proud of the Sea3on Animated fan effort. I thought it was super interesting that he wasn't interested in the Sonic games at all and was so passionate about the original canon he had a part in creating. It's definitely not the way I would've gone about creating a Sonic show, but that's why that's so interesting to me. It sounds like he had a lot of fun writing for the show, and the way he talks about Sonic Underground, along with many others, really makes me want to watch it eventually and see if it's as bad as everyone says. I'd probably watch it as a "background noise" show, though. Behind-the-scenes drama for productions is really intriguing to hear about. I've watched so many videos and have heard about Ken Penders a lot, but I have never read any of his writing. I really wonder what he said to that Sega executive for them to tear into Hurst like that. Once again, Hurst was so passionate to try to finish his story, even if it wasn't in the original series format, but instead as a film or even a comic. Adding Knuckles to SatAM would've been a dream come true for me. I wonder how they would've explained him being there, assuming those red eyes at the end were him. I'll keep this short, but I remember watching a bunch of AoStH when I was really young and having a dream about a promo for it. It was pretty much a trailer for a special episode that'd introduce Knuckles. But the way my mind fabricated him being introduced always stuck out to me. Knuckles would be a life-like badnik created by Dr. Robotnik, similar to Breezie and Robotnik Jr.. Maybe Knuckles in SatAM would've been just like that, potentially? Anyway, I miss when I could dream like that. Nicole and Sonic's relationship in the series stood out to me so much for some reason. I liked it a lot, and knowing that they were planning to expand on it for the cancelled film makes me so happy. The idea of Robotnik being the reason why Nicole is the way she is was so good, and so was the moment Sonic started wondering about who exactly created Nicole. I like the idea of Naugus taking center-stage as antagonist for post-Season 2, with Robotnik taking the "Snively" role as his abused sidekick. The sorcerer was such an interesting character to me, and I'm glad to hear that they were going to expand on him in the future if plans went through. The back story for the world of SatAM is definitely a fascinating one. Especially the idea of certain splinter-groups of mutated humans still being out there. I'm just thinking now about how dark this series truly is, especially if they ended up executing these ideas. A space colony in any Sonic media or canon will naturally make me think of the Space Colony ARK from Sonic Adventure 2. They could've potentially done a Sonic Adventure 2 adaptation down the road if they wanted to, provided the series stayed on the air for that long, of course. It makes me disappointed to learn that Tails' story arc for Season 2 was cut short. I think they still did well with what they ended up keeping. I also appreciate Hurst's concepts, for if they had to include musical segments in SatAM in order to continue the show. Apparently, people really didn't like the two "half-episodes" of Season 2, since they were Anotine-focused and halted the main story. As I said before, I liked them since they were nice breaks from the story-heavy episodes that'd usually come right before them, but I definitely could've lived without them if it meant that the arc of Season 2 could've been expanded on.
