Sonic and Tails mess with Eggman and distract him just long enough for the force field to only close right AFTER the missiles pass through, and uh
Robotropolis is completely obliterated in an atomic blast
Yeah, just like that! In a random one-off story in a random issue! Written by Bollers under the pen name he used for silly stuff! Robotropolis is just gone! The former capital of the Acorn Kingdom that they’d been fighting to restore for the last 110 issues and all of SatAM is just gone. Destroyed and irradiated. Completely inhospitable to life. I know it was already full of toxic waste and impossible to live in, but this is all so sudden
If you think this is just another short-term status quo shift, it isn’t! Robotropolis is literally going to be an irradiated ruin encased in a big dome for the entire rest of the series. They can never go back
And Sonic and Tails are just... unfazed by this. They just don’t give a shit about going back to Mobotropolis anymore now that Knothole’s been modernized
You may also be wondering: What about the roboticized, petrified Overlanders who were stuck in there? Colin, Hope’s grandma... NATE MORGAN?
Yeah, if they weren’t essentially dead before, they’re sure as hell dead now
I’ll be fair to Bollers here, though. The nuke wasn’t supposed to kill them. Again, he had plans to bring Nate back, even after this. But he was never able to get to that storyline before he left Archie, and Ian never brought him back either. So this nuclear explosion that Sonic and Tails walk away from with a smile ended up being the final nail in the coffin for Nate and co.
While Sally’s agency being taken away again is, uh, not great? I do like that Bollers is changing the Source of All into something more malevolent. It always came off as unintentionally SUPER creepy under Penders, and this just feels like Bollers acknowledging it
Some fans like to interpret the Source as less a benevolent deity and more an eldritch one, tricking the Acorn family into bonding with it and doing its bidding. With stories like this, it’s not hard to see why
this child is my hero

You know I’m starting to think that the spooky talking god sword that possesses Sally might be bad news
So remember when Sally rejected the Source of All and chose to forge her own path back in the Dip Story? Well, now that Robotropolis has been, you know, nuked, the magic pool of Tang that the Acorns use to bond with the Source has been evaporated. All that’s left is Max’s crown and the Sword of Acorns. And the Source is kinda freaking out about this
As a quick refresher, the Source of All is a creepy concept introduced by Penders. It was basically an excuse from Penders to say that Max is actually omniscient, and everything he does is totally justified because he can foresee the consequences of his actions
Penders also used this as an excuse to have Max say that God told him Sally had to marry Antoine. This is one of the plot twists he’s vocally the most proud of! He says they got a bunch of angry letters about it and that sales allegedly spiked because of the new love triangle. But you may have forgotten about that twist, because in over four years worth of comics it’s only come up again, uh. Once?
Anyway Bollers deserves a medal for blowing this stuff up
In this whimsical, fun-filled issue, Sonic is labeled an enemy of the state by the CIA
