Ok, first off, Ruby’s nickname for Sapphire is Sapphy. For all you fans who don’t know much about ancient Greek history, or about Victorian interpretations of that history, this has a whole layer of historic meaning... Sappho was a female poet who wrote love poems about women, and was highly regarded as one of the best poets of the ancient world. She lived and wrote largely on the Greek island of Lesbos, though fragments of her poetry have been found all around the Mediterranean. Starting to sound familiar? Yep, she’s the reason the word “lesbian” exists. Around the same time as that, Victorian people started referring to women who were into women with another term as well... SAPPHIC. So Sapphy is, in fact, sapphy!
