Why "Trust Fund Baby" is a bad song
Let's throw in some disclaimers before Why Don't We fans tear my head off.
I am not criticizing the band members themselves. Nor am I criticizing the instrumental, melodies, etc. Both of those did nothing wrong. What I'm mad about is the mess of lyrics that Ed Sheeran, Steve Mac, and/or Fred concocted.
The song sucks because it promotes unrealistic standards and implies that girls have to be perfect, while selling itself as being accepting of atypical girls.
Let's analyze that, shall we?
The first few lyrics are good. I don't have to be rich or know shoe brands or like shopping to score a member of Why Don't We? That's a relief.
But then we get to the requirements.
"Smart girl, stronger than her father, someone who will laugh at tryna fit in the crowd." So I have to be smart AND athletic? That requires a lot of work. Excludes certain body types. Anyone who doesn't have a father (like me!) isn't eligible. It's nice that the strength thing is measurable (but varies from father to father), although I'd like a measure for smart. Everyone's smart in some way.
"I like my women independent and I say to people that's my lady." So I'm independent of everyone except you? You expect me to not put up with crap from anyone and then let you walk around like you own me? That's a double standard.
"Save your money, don't spend it." Believe me, I would love to do that. But I have to go to college so I can be smart, and pay for sports so I can be stronger than my father (or food to fatten him up and weaken him). And if I want to be independent, I'll have to spend my own money on a house, car for my sweet sixteen, food, bills, etc.
"I don't want a girl who takes selfies, want her makeup free, don't want no mean girl lady, a pink prom queen." So if makeup gives me confidence, I should forsake that. Camera skills are a no-no. If I want pictures, someone else should take them. Real independent. And I can't win any popularity contests. You know, that actually sounds like he's accepting the things I'm bad at. A bit contradictory but on the right path.
"I want a girl who climbs trees, always dirt on her jeans." But I like washing my clothes? Oh well.
"Her daddy told her how to fix cars, maybe she can fix me." Trust me, I've tried the fixing people ordeal. You can't fix people. That's a fact. All that broken people want is someone to listen to them and validate them. They're usually not ready for relationships until they learn to love themselves. And if you're not going to try to fix yourself, then I have no hope in fixing you.
"I need a throwback kid who loves Missy Elliot." If I'm listening to Why Don't We, I probably don't like 90s rap.
"Who for my birthday makes a mixtape and puts it on cassette." So I have to spend my money that you told me to save, find a cassette, find a cassette maker, find a cassette player, and then make a mixtape?
"Want a girl with common sense who's dripping in competence." If I have common sense, then I'm not going to hang out with a guy who wants me to conform to these unrealistic standards.
"Don't wanna die to get rich but she loves 50 Cent." One point awarded to WDW for the pun.
Synopsis: Why Don't We slaps but Ed Sheeran needs to write some nicer lyrics if he wants to keep the fanbase.

Some musicians foretold now. How? For instance, Charlie XCX continues to be a force to be reckoned with despite her debuting in a previous decade. Then again, I don't think she changed her idiom that much since then, the scene merely caught up with what she did. You see, she keeps being seen as the one of the chief architects of hyperpop, because she already worked in the latter genre, listen to her pieces to hear what I mean. Sure, she was put in the category of electropop back then, but there appeared to be a caveat β hers seemed to be much different than the usual modus operandi of the style. These days everyone notices she presented us with the audio future we still live in, if you check the charts. Yes, she is one of the pioneers.
The prefabricated musicians are seen as a collection of random people that would not be present in the music industry, though we should be careful in this assertion. Sure, someone like Susan Boyle did become successful thanks to a reality show and I agree she wouldn't be like that others, though let's be honest β how many have listened to her thanks to her music? I think many were more invested in the latter thanks to the narrative she provided. Mind you, this is not a problem per se, a lot of great music has a story to tell as well, yet the tales might be in a lot of cases of these reality show winners the only thing that mattered. Yes, we might have located a major reason for the lack of longevity for many of these musicians, i.e. their backgrounds overwhelm their opuses.
