“What do you miss most about your planet, Dusty?”
Steve asked tentatively, perched on the platform of the holo room. He came here often, maybe to try and remember more about earth, maybe because he needed some time to pretend like things were normal, like the weight of the world wasn’t resting on his shoulders.
The rock like alien made a soft chirping noise, as if in thought, before answering slowly
“My… mate”
Steve’s eyes widened, an almost shocked smile spreading in his lips
“You have a mate? I mean obviously you’re- uh how long have you been together? What’s their name?”
Dusty thought it over for a minute, wiggling his little appendages as he counted the years
“160 years”
Before letting out a series of varying hums that made a soft but strong melody, ending it abruptly. Steve didn’t have a human name for it yet, but the scientist who passed away’s name was Dustin, and he vaguely remembered him mentioning his wife’s name was Suzie. Maybe he’d bring it up later.
“Oh so you’re still in the honey moon phase!”
“Dusty no understand.”
“It’s, it’s a joke Dusty, that’s a really long time.”
Dusty thought a money, his fingers running along the dashes of blue rock along his body, before stating
“It’s not enough.”
There was a silence in the air for a moment, Steve taking the chance to look out at the pixilated beach in front of them. But Dusty ended up breaking the silence
“Steve have mate on earth?”
Steve couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh, rubbing the back of his neck and shaking his head softly.
“Nope, no one waiting up for me back home. I had one, but she said I uh lived in the clouds a little too much. That I didn’t want to face reality… maybe she was right…”
A soft but sullen look falling across his face as he thought of the love he’d lost, putting on a forced smile before adding.
“But now she’s with Jonathan. And they seem happy, so I’m happy for her.”
Dusty was far quicker with his reply that he had been with the others
“Dusty hate Jonathan.”
Making Steve genuinely laugh and shake his head fondly at his little companion, not having anything good to respond with. Swallowing softly and looking out to the fake horizon with a smile and murmuring.
“I think everything worked out anyway.”
This is the first instalment, nothing too much because I wanted to see how people would react before I threw my whole phmussy into this.
Do I keep going?
Yes!!
Maybe not
