St. Euphrasia of Constantinople
Euphrasia was a pious girl who came from a noble family, who followed her mother into a life of charitable work and prayer. She planned to become a nun, but upon the death of her parents in a freak snowpocalypse, she learned that she had been betrothed to one Flavius Edax Adpetentis, a youth with an expensive haircut and political ambitions. Though Euphrasia was close to making up her mind not to marry, her family friend the Emperor Theodosius I convinced her to at least give the young man a chance.
She agreed to return to her family's lavish estate in the capital and meet the young man for dinner. The two of them laid down to eat, and she noticed that he hardly gave a thought to their conversation. Instead, his eyes were darting this way and that, coming to rest at times on the golden drinking vessels or the wall hangings. The biggest insult came as Euphrasia was telling him about a recent bread drive during which she had collected two hundred loaves for the homeless; meanwhile, Flavius was to the point of craning his neck to get a better view of a slave girl's behind. Euphrasia gave him enough of a nudge that he toppled from the bench, and he excused himself in embarrassment. It was then that she made peace with her decision to shed the wealth and luxury of her family, and she allowed the slaves to be freed and the estates to be divided among the poor before entering the convent for the last time.
