how do your ocs feel about home? do they associate it with a person? with a place? with a feeling? or are they just not sure? what does their ideal living space look like, and who would they want to live with? (you can answer for anyone, btw, but sterling, dane, and danny are my favs.)
I like Sterling, Danny, and Dane a lot too.Ā
Anyway, before he turned seventeen and jetted out, home was synonymous with oppression for Sterling, naturally, I mean, his parents were constantly trying to beat the witchcraft out of him. For years afterward, home was a crummy apartment and a twin mattress and hard apple cider in the frigidaire and some cheap art on the walls. He never minded working for shitty wages, but the loneliness did get to him. After he married Ilona and finally made it into a rewarding career, home was just warmth and comfort and a family. I like to imagine that they moved into a comfortable but not too snobby suburb and Sterling joined the PTA and youād have to ask pottersgal71 but maybe ilona coaches kidsā martial arts classes or something.Ā
Dane is comfortable anywhere where heās with Kim and their children, they probably had a flat for a while before moving into a house but circa the second war they were definitely living well in an estate that could rival the one he grew up in, with enough stolen art on the walls to buy an island. Growing up, though, home was the underside of a downtown freeway overpass and he was a graffiti artist, to speak metaphorically. He wreaked so much havoc.Ā
Danny never really had a sense of home, growing up. She was always shunted to the sidelines, hidden from the media, and treated like a nonentity. She found what she thought was her true home in Lieselās entourage, because Lise treated her well, but that didnāt turn out too well, and by the time she realized sheād fallen in with the wrong side of the war, sheād already taken the Dark Mark.Ā
Between the wars is when she really develops a sense of what home means. She has her wife and their adopted children and for the first time she feels loved unconditionally.Ā
For Lise, home is a dirty secret. She doesnāt even let the House Elves in her room, and sheād rather come in through her friendsā windows in the middle of the night to meet them than have them in her own home. She likes all-inclusive suites at the hotels her friend Tara Clark owns. She likes sitting at the bar until close. Hell, at one point she sleeps in the snow because she doesnāt want to go home but thereās nowhere else to go. Even after she and Phillip have their own place with their family, she canāt sit still. Sheās got that Sagittarius wanderlust. Rome. Munich. Puerto Vallarta and the random Canadian diner on the beach. Panama; paella. New Orleans and the Cafe du Monde. God, her favorite was New Orleans. (It was her honeymoon. Mardi Gras. It was her favorite city in the world, she wanted to die there.) She drags her family all around the world and she wonāt stop buying timeshares. She always says,Ā āIām a Dolohov, and weāre not afraid of anything,ā but to be honest, she doesnāt know how to stop running.Ā
And for Belle, home is the open road. Has been since she was six. Give her cheap motels and continental breakfast. Sheāll sleep in the car. Sheāll sleep anywhere she can have Camrenās warm body pressed against her. Sheās home every second of every day, even if sheās trying to cross the street in a four-way intersection, as long as sheās with him and their children.Ā
what's the hardest thing sterling's ever had to write?
Toss up between coverage of Antoninās murder trial (which Billie was assigned to, but couldnāt write because her own sister was theĀ āmurder victimā so Sterling wrote it and put her name on the byline), and the novelization of his life (which he wanted to be real, but that meant revisiting all of his past fuck-ups)Ā
sterling carter to hedy goodyear and larissa tate at some point probably:Ā āYOUR SOURCES ARE UNRELIABLE, YOUR PHOTOS ARE RETOUCHED AND YOUR REPORTING IS BADā
ok ok but how does sterling feel about lise's "death"?? and how do hedy and larissa react? does the media continue to demonize her, or so they all suddenly get sympathetic? im so curious omg. (i love your characters, btw, sorry for geeking out a little here.)
AAAAAH I AM SO GLAD YOU LIKE THEM AND IāM SORRY FOR THE WAIT, I WAS AT WORKĀ
(do feel free to send me things while Iām working btw Iāll answer them at home)Ā
ANYWAY
Sterling is obviously hit hard by the death. He liked Lise. He protected her, or tried to. And even though she kind of seduced him and it was so disastrous on both ends that he decided he needed to install a pull-up bar in his office, he was still her friend. And of course, he had to be there for Billie. He reported at her fatherās trial (which was a Big Deal, like Trial of the Century material), because Billie was supposed to do it but she was too broken up about it, and he put her name on the byline.Ā
Of course, Hedy and Larissa, or at least Larissa, are never going to give Lise any slack, but theyāre not the only reporters, and the mediaās reaction is mixed. At the trial, itās widely discussed between witnesses and the press that if anyone was forced to sleep with THAT man for years, they might develop a taste for people as dissimilar as possible, too. So, in the civ world, Lise remains kind of disapproved of, but her death isnāt celebrated or anything, and as far as the whole feedist thing goes, sheās given aĀ ājust this onceā sort of free pass because of All Sheās Been Through.Ā
In sort of the underground, hedonisty world though, she basically ascends to legendary. Years after her death, young feeder girls are picking up copies of her public-domain diary that ended up mass-produced after it was found in her fatherās furnace (but only because she planted it there--she full on gone girlād herself tbh), hoping to pick up tips and tricks (and skipping the incest bits because gross, and always ending up a little disappointed with how much vague, bible-referencing poetry they end up having to sift through). There are feedee boys well into the 2020s who are still jacking off to that oneĀ āiconicā photo of her (sheās in a state of partial disrobe engaged in an intimate act and Phillipās head is cut irreverently out of the frame--this is actually a photograph Liesel took herself with a tripod and planted in her fatherās desk in order to incriminate her. Once more for the people in the back: at some point after 1978, some jackass pilfered a ministry evidence room, procured, among other things, a photograph of a teenage CSA victim used to put her father behind bars, and it went viral as wank-off material.)Ā
Not exactly the reaction Liesel was hoping for--respect for the dead is a big deal for her. She has all these little nuances about death--like, for example, she canāt look at the dead body of a loved one because she thinks itās a better honor to their memory to remember them as they were alive, instead of dead, in a suit, in a box, and whenever she really, really wants to stick it to an enemy, sheāll mutilate the corpse after she kills them. So she kinda wishes theyād have left her well enough alone after sheĀ ādiedā, but she isnāt even shocked anymore.Ā
And ironically enough, even though the world will probably never truly understand her, they understand her a lot better inĀ ādeathā than they ever did in life, when she was the plastic doll-faced dictator, and later, the scary forest witch from Hansel and Gretel.Ā

how does sterling feel about Hedy and larissa's deaths?
YAY I LOVE GETTING IN STERLINGāS HEADĀ
And well...he kind of saw it coming. He saw that Lieselās enemies were dying every year and he put two and two together and thought she had an avenger (probably Phillip but I mean you never know, half the country owed her a favor. He never figured out that she wasnāt dead, but he was pretty damn close.)Ā
Sterling could never kill anyone himself, but in sort of a guilty way, he thought it was convenient that they were gone...until Larissaās ghost got her job back in the second war, that is.Ā
He was happy with their replacements, who ended up being Blanche Kazan (the new cartoonist who also wrote the occasional celebrity article), and Danny Callaghan (who wrote an advice column, and who Sterling actually asked out but she turned him down because she was not only in a committed relationship with another witch, but is 100% gay.)Ā
And when he wrote the story about their deaths, he didnāt frame it as a good thing, but he also didnāt neglect to mention the various people theyād hurt and defamed over the years. They made a lot of enemies, after all, their deaths were bound to be violent.Ā
what is the medias response to denise's reaction over phillip's weight gain?
you get a drabble go you
Sterling Carter has been beat to the punch enough times in his life. The minute it hits the newsroom that Denise Kutner faintedĀ at Kingās Cross after an angry ranting fit, he decides that heās not going to let this story get the wrong spin. Heās not going to let Hedy Goodyear and Larissa Tate pass Denise off as some concerned, loving mother whoās only looking out for her own. He is a good man, and an honest reporter.Ā
And havenāt Billieās sister and her boyfriend suffered enough?Ā
ā
He sneaks his story into the proofs for the morning issue. He goes to sleep. He wakes up and clocks into work. He gives a satisfied smirk as he looks over the issue thatās just been sent out.Ā
Today in gossip, at the bottom of the page, is a picture of Denise lying on her side on the platform. The headline:Ā
LOCAL WOMAN CAUSES SCENE OVER COMPLETE TRIVIALITY
You wouldnāt believe what trifling matters caused this local Quidditch wife to terrorize an entire train platform. Read more on Page 5
ā
The next morning, Billie offers him a smiled thanks, and he receives a package from Liesel. The letter says,Ā
Lieber Herr Carter,Ā
You always look out for me, donāt you?Ā
I was going to send chocolate, but given our history, I thought it might come across as inappropriate.Ā
GruĆ Diene Lise.
He doesnāt know much German, but the last letter she sent him was signed Ihre Lise, and he feels like he might have gotten a promotion in her book.Ā
Enclosed in the package is a perfectly taxidermized squirrel. He cringes, but ultimately puts it on his shelf. Sheās a strange girl, that Lise, but she has her thoughtful moments.Ā
ā
Of course, that afternoon, all Hell breaks loose.Ā
āWhat have you DONE?ā Larissa snaps at him, coming up to his desk with Hedy in tow.Ā
āLain blame exactly where itās due.ā
āYouāve COMPLETELY gone against the angle Hedy and I have been working for this story since September!āĀ
āI told the truth,ā he says.
āIt was OUR story!āĀ
āStinks to be you.ā Ā He shrugs and brushes them off, knowing all the while he hasnāt heard the last of retaliation.
A few minutes later, the meek little coffee girl approaches him and taps him on the shoulder.Ā āThe boss wants to see you,ā she murmurs, before disappearing as if into thin air.Ā
Sterlingās supervisor is this rich, gym-obsessed tyrant in a suit, so of course he sided with Larissa when she decided to turn Liesel into a freakshow.Ā āLooks like itās that time again, when you beg me to keep your job,ā he says. and Sterling gets on his knees.Ā
ā
The next morning, a redaction is printed, and Larissa Tateās story about what a concerned, loving mother Denise is hits the front page.Ā
āWell, at least you tried,ā says Billie, setting a coffee on the corner of his desk on her way around the newsroom.Ā
Sterling was getting mighty tired of hearing that.Ā
