A lot of things were unexpected that day.
First, the fact that Lewis was late to pick up his niece, but when he got there she wasnât throwing a tantrum, quite the opposite. When she saw him she saw him, she came running through the schoolâs entrance with the biggest smile on her face when just earlier that week she made a fuss to go to class every morning â before and after getting there.Â
The second was the smallest boy who was right behind her. His backpack swung from side to side, while Wendy ran up front turning every few seconds to giggle at him.
And just when Lewis thought those were the only two unexcepted things, you walked out of the door carrying a few books in your hands and a big bag on your shoulder, calling for Wendy and the smallest boy.Â
âUncle Lew!!!â His niece screamed before barreling into his legs and hugging him. He chuckled, bending down to kiss her mop of curls. âHave you met Leo?âÂ
âI donât think so,â he shook his head just as the boy finally reached them.Â
The kidâs version of a black Jordan and the styled curly hair made Lewis smile, that boy appeared to be around five but was already starring a fashion sense that a few older people hadnât.
âLeo, youâll give me a heart attack one of these days. You canât go out running like this, honey,â your voice carried a serious but sweet tone simultaneously.Â
Lewisâ eyes found you standing a few feet away, curly hair clipped away from your face by a few strands, a pencil skirt, and a cream blouse. The folder and books in your arms gave him a hint of what you were doing there, and his silent guess turned out to be true when Wendy turned with a toothless grin and introduced you: âThis is Miss Yn, our new teacher!â She took a step to stand beside you looking up with a beaming face that reflected yours. âAnd this is Leonard, her son, my new classmate. Theyâre new here, can we introduce the city to them like we did with Jackie and Uncle Toto? Also, can we have playdates later? Can we go to the park? Can weââ

âMamma, I donât wanna eat,â Leo held his hands behind his back giving you his best puppy eyes and you chuckled.Â
âHow about you try a few bites and then go play with Dee, huh?âÂ
âYeah, champ, you gotta make your body strong so you can run as fast as you can,â Lewis tried, already cutting a sandwich in half for Wendy. âHave you ever tried vegan sandwiches?â He asked and Leo shook his head.
âI donât like lettuce, mamma does though,â he shared, pointing his small finger at you.
âWhat do you mean you donât like lettuce? Lettuce is exactly what makes us run even faster, it gives us tons of energy!âÂ
âIt does?â the curly-haired boy asked, hands now on the side of his body and curious eyes watching the food in Lewisâ hands.Â
âYeah, I eat it all the time so I can drive my car in endless circles.â
You smiled watching the interaction.Â
âHow about you have a bite? You donât have to eat it all, just a bite. But I bet you will want to finish it. This one has so many things that make us bigger and stronger.â
âStrong like you?â his big brown eyes now looking at Lewisâ biceps, and you chuckled at your kid's face when the driver curled his arms and flexed his muscles.Â
âYeah, strong just like me!âÂ
****
âThey truly made a bond in a short time, huh?â You commented.
âGuess weâll be seeing each other a lot more often,â Lewis bumped your shoulder with his and you smiled. You wouldnât lie that the prospect of interacting with him more than you did the last week wasnât a bad thing at all.
âIâm not opposed to that.âÂ
âNeither am I.âÂ

Omg yesssss!!!!
So, maybe this would go like thisâŚ
tw: mentions of an absent father.
âSheâll come around, itâs alright,â Lewis would whisper to you after your daughter stormed out of the kitchen and went to school without acknowledging either of you.
You had to give it to him, he was more patient than any other person would be. Hell, even if you were starting to get angry with your kid, Lewis would smile and brush it off. He did it when she ignored him the first time they officially met, he did it when she refused to go to the GP you two went public, and he kept doing it even after a few months, you were basically living together now, but she was still a stubborn fifteen-year-old, and lewis was still the patient forty-something.
So it didn't surprise you when he showed up to her football match wearing her school teamâs shirt and a cap so he would call all the attention to himself. Lewis got there even before you did and that did not go unnoticed by your daughter.
Your daughter kept searching for her dad in the stands even after the first period was over. Your daughter scored the winning goal and searched for the man that promised to be there only to realize he wasn't.
Yet, Lewis was there right beside you cheering as if she was his own. Clapping and screaming her name as if she hadnât ignored him all these months.
She felt bad. Felt guilty, and forgotten by her dad and his new family. The mixture of feelings only being turbinated by her teenage phase.
Still, when she walked to the stands crying, refusing to celebrate with her team, Lewis, the always patient one, was there to embrace her in a warm hug. One that should have been given by her dad. Lewis was the one who told her she did a great job and that the Captain Position would definitely be hers soon. He was the one who offered to train with her and watched her tears cease before she hugged you two finally recognizing how lucky she was. That was the family that was given to her, and she was going to cherish it from now on.
