The Women Who Caught the Babies highlights important aspects of the training and work of African-American midwives and the ways in which they have helped, and continue to help, so many families by “catching” their babies at birth. The blend of Eloise Greenfield's poetry and Daniel Minter's art evokes a heartfelt appreciation of the abilities of African-American midwives over the course of time. The poem “Africa to America" begins the poetic journey. The poem “The Women" both heralds the poetry/art pairing and concludes it with a note of gratitude. Also included is a piece titled “Miss Rovenia Mayo,” which pays tribute to the midwife who caught newborn Eloise.

While her mama is away, Astrid and her papa have fun acting out the challenges an astronaut faces on a space mission — like being in zero gravity (“I can do that all day long!” she says), eating food from a kind of tube, and doing science experiments with the help of cookie sheets. When at last it’s time to meet Mama at the air base, Astrid wears her favorite space T-shirt to greet her. But where exactly has Mama been?

My name’s Souksada but you can call me “May”. I love volleyball and listening to music. I just graduated this August from the National University of Laos, majoring in Applied Mathematics. I’m currently interning at the International Organization for Migration in Laos and also teaching part-time at the IZUMI Academy of Laos (teaching abacus).

I pursue STEM at work because I think it will allow a wide variety of opportunities in this day of modern technology.

I am still not fluent in English. So that could be a barrier especially when I will work for international organizations and traveling overseas.

Liaw Lin Ji, Brunei Country Manager, DHI Water &Environment.

Liaw first joined DHI Brunei in 2013 as an Environmental Specialist and was promoted as Country Manager in 2017. Her notable projects include the Environmental Impact Assessment for the Hengyi Single Point Mooring & Subsea Pipeline (Brunei), Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan for the CC4 Section of the Brunei-Temburong Bridge Link Project, and Strategic Environmental Assessment for Indonesia Master Plan for Accelerated Economic Development (MP3EI).

 Why do you pursue STEM as a career?

STEM allows me to solve complex environmental issues through both quantitative and creative means. It also serves as a key foundation in understanding a number of fundamentals governing natural processes that is essential in order for better decision-making in environmental assessments, for varying project levels, e.g. strategic or specific project-level.
