Hey guys! So I thought for the next couple of Mondays I’d allow you a more in-depth look at my personal experiences CLUB EDITION.  I know, exciting stuff. Today’s post will be an overlook of club’s at Northeastern, and then in the Monday’s following, I’ll give you the inside scoop on the clubs I’m involved in! Let’s jump in!

Northeastern has a boat load of clubs to join: over 400 actually.  There is literally something for everybody.  And if you’re still looking for something that we don’t have yet, grab a couple of your closest friends, find a faculty adviser, and make a new club!  So you may be wondering, how on earth do I narrow down all these clubs into areas I might enjoy?  Good question, honestly still navigating that one myself.  To give you a better idea of what clubs are available on campus, I have clumped them down into a couple major categories.

Fraternity and Sorority Life:  Northeastern does have fraternities and sororities on campus, and about 15% of the student body is involved in them.  We have both traditional sororities and fraternities, as well as honors fraternities for areas such as business, pharmacy, science, and even music.  The process for joining one of these societies varies widely on the organization, but all are great ways to meet new people and to get involved with volunteering and service in Boston, as well as to network with current and alumni members.

Professional Societies: These clubs are normally centered around majors, or specific professional areas.  For example, I am a member of Northeastern University American Institute of Chemical Engineers.  Most of these organizations are chapters of larger, national organizations, and they offer students the opportunity to connect with faculty, alumni, and other important figures in their areas of interest.  You may also have the opportunity to travel to national conferences for the organization, which is a great way to connect with employers and other universities to network for the future.

Sports: Northeastern has a good number of different club sports teams ranging in levels of experience and ability as well as competitiveness.  Club sports include things like soccer, lacrosse, water polo, ultimate frisbee, even broomball.  Some of these sports do require tryouts and there are some clubs with multiple teams depending on what level of involvement and difficulty you’re looking for! It’s a great way to stay active and participate in sports you may miss from high school, or have always wanted to try!

Performing: Okay, I’m lumping a huge number of clubs together here, but if you’re looking for performing arts, we have got them!  We have multiple theater groups here on campus ranging from modern day musicals to Shakespeare.  If you’re looking to just sing, we have that too!  There are several a cappella groups (shout out to our national champs, the Nor’easters!) as well as traditional choir groups as well.  For your other musical areas, we have multiple bands and orchestras, some of which can count towards class credit to (hopefully) help your GPA. And my favorite? Dance! There are clubs on campus devoted to dance ranging from cultural dance, to ballroom, to hip-hop, and everything in between.

Culture and Religious Clubs: Northeastern prides itself on being an extremely diverse campus, and because of that, we have organizations to support people coming from all types of backgrounds and religions.  My roommate is Latina and she is very involved with Latinx, an organization bringing together students of Latin heritage.  This club, as well as many others, offers mentoring programs, scholarships, language lessons, professional development, and volunteering opportunities.  We also have on campus resources for religion and even a sacred space in Ell Hall for prayer and religious ceremonies.

Activism: Being from many different walks of life, it is no surprise that Northeastern students are extremely involved in areas of social, political, environmental, and other areas of justice.  Northeastern is proud that our students are passionate about specific movements, and we have many different clubs working to increase knowledge and awareness surrounding many different issues.  Clubs in this area range from very broad topics such as environmental justice to very focused areas, such as increasing awareness for rare diseases. 

Diverse Interests: Not every club really fits into one of the areas above; like I said we have clubs for a lot of different interests like Quidditch or the club for gaming enthusiasts or outdoors clubs! Northeastern lists clubs out by more specific clubs on its website (which I will link below).  There is really something for everyone (there’s probably 6-7 something’s for everyone honestly).  I implore you to take a look and discover what you’re favorite extracurricular may be!

This Wonderful Wednesday (see what i did there??? Please laugh) I will be combining TWO questions! Ambitious right? We have had a lot of visitors this fall at Northeastern as college application deadlines quickly approach.  We know so many of you travel from far and wide to come to campus and often want to enjoy Boston while you’re here too! For those of you that are coming up for just a day, it’s still fun to hop on into town to grab a quick meal before heading home.

But NICOLE, what is there to do, and where should we go to eat!? I figured you’d ask, but have no fear!  I have a tour lined up of Boston broken down by meal and neighborhood so you can see some sights and fill your belly at the same time!

Hey everyone! I’m Nicole, and I am currently a second year Chemical Engineering (ChemE) major at Northeastern University!  I am a member of Husky Ambassadors, Northeastern Dance Company (NUDANCO), Engineers Without Borders (EWB), and Northeastern University American Institute of Chemical Engineers (NU AIChE).  I’m so excited to be creating and posting here on this blog!

Now that we have all the business out of the way! Who doesn’t love an icebreaker… or five! I have scoured google for some fun icebreakers so you can get to know me better!

What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten for breakfast that is not a breakfast food? Definitely a tie between cold pizza, and spaghetti, absolutely no shame, I’d eat them again for breakfast in a heartbeat.

What Disney/cartoon character were you inexplicably afraid of as a kid?  Jafar, hands down. He’s the only character I didn’t want to go up and see in Disney World. 

What were words you couldn’t pronounce as a child, so you made up your own?  Specific, I said Pacific instead for at least 3-5 years of my childhood.  I didn’t make up a word, but still.

What’s your real favorite book, and what book do you pretend is your favorite to sound smart?  Real favorite? Hungry Hungry Caterpillar; who doesn’t love that book? Tale of Two Cities I say to sound smart, but I actually do love this book.  Some notable mentions are also Le Petit Prince, Princess Bride, and The Great Gatsby. 

What was the name of your first car? Harvey, but pronounced with a french accent like ‘Arvay.
