⭐️ Meet Stellectra! This powerhouse of a girl group from the 80s and early 90s is sure to bring some groovy and electrifying vibes! 🩷💛🩵

Holy smokes… this took me FOREVER to make. I spent the entirety of June working on each of the trio’s designs and personalities. But it’s all worth it in the end!

I’ve been wanting to make another group of Honey Girls OCs who actually lived through the 80s and 90s in their timeline, since I’ve been super interested in retro styles in that timespan alongside that of the 2000s. Thought that would be a neat way to expand upon the lore of the Honey Girls since Stellectra is supposed to be very important to them in-universe (in this AU of course)!

There are three past girl groups (predecessors of the Honey Girls) that I’m developing for my Honey Girls AU. They’re significant in the story because not only are they the in-universe inspirations for the trio but also share similarities in style: being colorful and having a star/astral theme in certain ways. The Honey Girls’ manager, Madeline, was a former member of one of them.

Stellectra

Years active: 1985-1998

Members: Claire (Bengal cat, center, keyboardist/keytarist), Jess (fox, guitarist), Nora (spaniel, drummer)

Asterism

Years active: 1999-2008

Members: Laura (wolf), Madeline (corgi), Rachel (cheetah), Diane (Siamese cat)

B-Sweet

Years active: 2005-2015

Members: Bianca (panda), Bella (red panda), Beatrice (ocelot), Brianna (fennec fox), Bridgette (raccoon)

Stellectra being so similar to the Honey Girls was what made people think that the present-day trio are carrying on their legacy. Being a trio band with the center being a feline keyboardist (except Claire’s image color is pink rather than purple), as well as being the only band of the predecessors who also play instruments instead of just being vocalists and dancers.

Perhaps Teegan owning a special edition vinyl of Stellectra’s biggest hits was part of her forming her band with Risa and Viv alongside sparking her love for synthy music and both playing and making it herself…

I’ve also been developing how Stellectra would look in the mid-90s since they were also active further into that decade, but while I was researching trends in the 90s there were a lot of things that wouldn’t line up with their style since I ended up making Stellectra so aggressively 80s (they have even more Jem inspiration than the Honey Girls do, lol). Grunge was especially popular in the early to mid 90s (although 80s influences were still there during the early 90s).

It was easier for me to think about what music they’d make during the mid-90s than their fashion. Stellectra loved their synths. A lot. So what did they do? They discovered the early EDM scene and met pioneers of various subgenres of it, eventually incorporating it into their music. As for the fashion? There wasn’t a lot of popular fashion in much of the 90s (except for the late 90s, which I’m saving for another girl group I’ll develop later on in the Honey Girls AU that got especially popular in the 2000s) that were colorful, girly, and sparkly. There was the Clueless movie from 1995 that I could get inspiration from in terms of fashions, but I can’t really think of much else, especially since I’m also focused on developing stage outfits for Stellectra rather than outfits they’d wear off-stage.

Then again, the Honey Girls’ world doesn’t have to 100% line up with ours in terms of trends in fashions and music, especially since the Honey Girls’ time was when third spaces and colorful things were still abundant while we don’t have much of that anymore now.

And in case you’re wondering, the late 90s-2000s girl group I mentioned is Asterhythm. I decided to change the name since there’s already a musical group in real life called Asterism, plus it makes a great portmanteau like Stellectra does. It’s the same girl group the Honey Girls’ manager, Madeline (who’s another OC; sadly we don’t know if the HG even have a manager in canon), is from.

Madeline is likely going to be the next Honey Girls OC I’ll design. For her, I’m probably going to draw both her design when she was part of Asterhythm and her current design as the Honey Girls’ manager. Especially since she’s also a really important character to the AU.
