Random thought I just had, do you think the translator can interpreter sign language? Cause obviously it knows what you mean, but how does it to express that to another person without the use of a sound? Or does it make it so another person automatically just understands sign language?
Yes! I think the translator can interpret sign language! I think you will end up with something that resembles 'sound' to your brain, even if it's not coming in through your ears. Honestly the translator already kind of does that, filtering out the sounds you ARE hearing so that you aren't constantly hearing double speech (in the original language and in your tongue, both). Though it will use one of Allnet's default AI voices.
I suspect during installation, the signer can choose a 'voice' - high/low, femme/masc, that kind of thing. And the voice might likely change as the translator becomes accustomed to the user's personality, evolving like any AI (and the translators do use a certain amount of AI, as contentious as these words are in 2026 hah).
Another controversial bit; unwilling deafness is probably not an issue, as hearing can be restored with modern medical technology. So the only reason you would not be able to speak is if its cultural, physiological (i.e. a species who does not possess a mouth/vocal folds and sign IS their communication), or in the case of humans, they are either selectively mute, or they are Deaf (captial D) and hold that as their culture, unwilling to become a Hearing person.
(I minored in ASL and attended college at CSUN, where I lived in the Deaf dorms, and I do use sign conversationally. Deaf Culture is a real thing, and there are many who would not surrender their Deaf identity even if given the choice, and that's OK, too đ)

I was just thinking, wouldn't the shivering trigger major uncanny vally. Like looking at those things would probably make all of my hairs stand up. I feel like Bonnie would trigger uncanny value with the splitting thing.
Fr- like mc had to pick up on Freddy and Bonnie because if the effect of uncanny vally-
Scince wise, other species that evolved with another have no reason for the effect thierfore they cant feel it.
But humans evolved eith other genesis of humans
(Homo heidelbergensis, Homo luzonensis, Homo habilis, Homo naledi, Homo floresiensis, Homo erectus, Denisovans, Homo neanderthalensis.) All of which are technically deffrint species of human, though some remain as ghost DNA. (Fun fact alot of human species interbred with homo sapians, so very miniscule traces of thier DNA remains. Including a skeleton that was half homo sapien and half Neanderthal if I remember correctly having been found) but as evidence shows other species of humans whloudl hunt down and eat homo sapians. Among other humans. Which is why id assume we have the uncanny vally effect. Humans naturally just know if your pretending to be a species your not.
Imagine trying to explain that yeah, im looking at you rn and everh bone is telling me that you are not what you clame to be? How do I know? Cause I just do.
If you ever wanna know some human genetic facts for any reason ever I have the awnsers. I spend far too much time watching archeology videos.
Hmmm!!!
So your theory is that MC can see Bonnie because humans have an innate sense of the uncanny?
What an... interesting thought.
Though I'd say in Freddy's case, she didn't start suspecting anything of him until Moon brought up (all in good fun, of course).
Sometimes, I think MC forgets that it isn't just her who is experiencing the greater universe for the first time; this is the universe's first time experiencing humans, too. We don't exactly know what humankind will bring to the table, yet. Things that are innate an unremarkable to us (a bit like adrenaline) that give us some edge elsewhere. Who knows.
But I will ask you this:
Before MC met Freddy and Bonnie (respectively), had she ever seen another of their kind before? And, what did she already know about either of them?
Completely unrelated definitely non suspicious question.
If your charechters were in a deck of cards. Which card would each character be?
Hmmm? đ
Sun would be Jack of Hearts. I'd say Moon would be Jack of Spades!
MC... if not Queen, then Ace of Clubs? I'm not sure what would 'suit' her best, lol! And Freddy would be King of Diamonds! I'm not sure about the others, but these would be my best guess for these four!
Bonus - maybe Stell is queen of hearts and Brach is the joker, and he's kinda pissed about it lol I can envision him unwillingly juggling after being forced to wear the outfit... hohoho
I just finished reading chapter 29... and I was thinking, has our girl not had her period once since she was taken!? Like omg I know it can be delayed due to stress- but ya know since things are winding down shes bound to start eventually!! Omg how would you even explain that to moon. "Yeah I shed the inside of one of my organs once a month" and it would be extra painful due to the extra long delay... poor mc. I would hate to start my cycle in space.
Okay, so two answers for this one!
The main, canon answer is... there are authors who like the 'oh no, period' trope, and authors who don't! I tend to be the latter, and wouldn't add something like that unless it was necessary to the story in some way. Though it wouldn't make for a bad 'extra' or sidestory! (wink wink)
My assumption is that in this AU, there are other mammals who do have periodsâMurids (the mice people), for exampleâbut also for all of Sun's negligence, he was probably... ahem, pretty thorough in that part of his investigation on humans. That's my headcanon at least, since it's 'off-screen' and isn't addressed (can authors have headcanons about their own works? hahaha).
I actually think some of the other stuff we joked about is MORE unique to humans, like the appendix, wisdom teeth, and weird medical procedures! But periods? Hmm, I don't think they're overly mysterious to the universe in this AU .
Needless to say, MC would have had all the supplies she needed even with Sun.
And on that note, second answer is, if I had chosen to address it... I can tell you how it would have gone! I've written out a few 'extra' scenes with both Sun and Moon, and we'll start with Sun who very probably went through MC's bathroom trash before this encounter. Read below!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Sweet, I've noticed you've been tired since yesterday. Is it... your menstruation time? You know you can talk about itâ"
"No, thank you," you say politely. Absolutely not.
You'd found supplies under the sink, and had been using them with no comment to Sun.
"I understand," Sun says. You peer out of your blanket cocoon at him skeptically.
"..."
"...But if you do need a hot compressâor cold?âI can provide one. Or perhaps if you'd like to stretch, I can help in that area, if you'd like me toâ"
"That's private," you hiss, eyes narrowed at his outstretched hands. Your patience didn't have near enough bandwidth to put up with Sun's curiosity. Not on this matter, not right nowâand...
...
Especially not when he appears to be blushing.
"...No one else is here," he insists. "I'm only trying to helâ"
"âout."
"What was that?"
"Get out."
(If this had occurred, or reoccurred, with Moon):
Moon's POV:
Though it's his second visit of the day, Moon finds you still curled under your blankets. You hadn't responded to his knock either.
He frowns.
...
Freddy... Freddy had told him that you'd still have bad days. That he shouldn't expect too much, even as he felt you had been doing well during his last visits. It soothes him very little, even if he understands that.
He places your lunch tray down on the table, considering whether or not you would appreciate his presence right now, when you shiftâand part of your face is exposed. Your face isâ
...
Pain...?
Moon's mind reels, flying through your meals, the dietary restrictions he'd placed, if there had been some some oversight that he'dâ
...
He blinks, mind slowing.
Could it be, perhaps...
...
What was the date?
He'd almost forgotten the date Sun had writtenâand circledâin his notes about you.
Pulling out his pager, he double checks.
...
Oh.
He looks your way.
So this... was normal, for you.
...
Moon leaves without another word.
.
.
.
When he returns, he has a blister pack with two pills inside. You are exactly where he'd left you, though you appear to have shifted some.
Going to your lunch, he removes one of the side dishesâthe red tuber mash you always finishedâand the glass of water next to it. Then, he moves your chair to your bedside, and places the water and the mash, along with the pills, on the seat for you.
Your eyes crack open at the disturbance.
"The pain medicine needs to be taken with food," he explains. Your eyes don't shift to him, remaining on the food.
...
For a moment, he thinks you might reject it, or tell him to leave. Sun's notes had described you as becoming veryâ
You nod wordlessly, and push yourself up until you're propped up on one arm, resting on your hip. Moon blinks in surprise.
Rather than going for the food, he watches you push the pills out from the packaging first and drink them down. Only then do you move to the mash, if a bit reluctantly.
You only eat a few spoonfuls, but Moon is satisfied with that as you push the plate away.
When he goes to take the dishware back, your voice catches his attention unexpectedly.
"Thank you," you say quietly. Your watery eyes are on his hands.
...
He ignores the tight feeling in his chest, finishing his task and moving away from you.
"I'm assuming you don't want this?" he asks, lifting your tray once more. You just shake your head. And after a moment... "...Is there anything else I can get for you?" Moon winces, hoping his voice sounded neutral, to your ears.
...
You don't answer for a long moment, and Moon is almost ready to accept that, though it pinches just a bit. But then, your voice comes out one more time.
"Chocolate...?" you say, and to his surprise, you're actually looking at him this time. It appears to be a request, though Moon is not familiar with the word.
He isn't sure what to say, and can only hope you'll elaborate, or perhaps suggest something else.
...
You do not.
Rather, you appear to have read something on his face, because your gaze drops in disappointment. And despite his every urge to stop you, he can only watch helplessly as you withdraw into your bedding once more.
...
He leaves the room after a moment, mind set on a new task.
Whatever this 'chocolate' was, he would surely find a substitute he could offer, if only you'd give him the time to try.
The emblem of the Sovereign Universal Court!
Honestly I was just having fun playing with different shapes and angles, but this is the 'badge' version that I imagine officers of the Court and the Sovereign Guard wear (that may or may not be relevant for book 2). MC describes it as a '5-pointed starburst with a halo', and the 2D 'stamp' version of the emblem IS actually very simplified.
My working lore is that the shape is actually supposed to resemble the original shuttle of the first starbound people. It also has 5 points for the 5 founding species and sitting court members.
Anyway meant to have this up with chapter 29, but I accidentally posted this week's chapter four days early (whoops, why they put the 'post chapter' button so close to the 'edit chapter' button on Ao3 đ) so this wasn't finished yet. Chapter 30 will be posted next Thursday, 7/23 on schedule (gods willing, lol).
During this last week's chapter, the Glamrock's did report what happened to law enforcement, and got an unexpectedly proactive response. I ultimately decided to cut this scene because A. it sort of threw off the chapter pacing a bit, and B. I thought I could portray this information retroactively later on with no effect to the story. Still, it technically happened during this chapter, and here it is if anyone wants to see what happened first-hand.
With a plan of action in motion, the team had also filed an official report with law enforcement on what had happened - though they did not expect much. And yet, surprisingly, an officer had called them back to take their statements.
----
Chica had advised setting the meetup coordinates to someplace close to Arvello - her home planet, but also the home planet of the Solairs. The team was hopeful that that might be where The Stellar Night was headed, anyway.
âI canât believe even the Glamrocks are involved in this situation,â the officer had admitted over the video channel.
Moon and the team had exchanged gazes at his words.
â...âSituationâ? Did⌠someone else make a report before us?â Chica asked.
The Gallus officer had nodded tiredly, the warty ceres around his eyes making him look especially worn out.Â
âYeah. Allnet is accusing Solair of..." he seems to be observing the paperwork in front of him. "...essentially, theft. 'unauthorized removal of a trial subject in Court custody'. And on top of that, we have more people claiming to be eye witnesses of the kidnapping than seems plausible,â heâd sighed. âAnd now that itâs gettinâ attention from the press, itâs moved up on the priority list, too. Signet hasnât responded to us, but weâve told them to turn the suspect in if he shows up.â
Moonâs eyes had met Freddyâs, and the bear had winked at him.Â
Can u imagine if when Sun kidnapped reader that they might of had asthma?. Like it hasn't been triggered in forever but with all this stress they start having attacks.
Oooh man, the way I've considered the realities of being cold-turkey abducted!! đĽ˛
That would for sure be a rough turn. It's just one example, too - 60%-70% of Americans are taking some kind of prescription medication. Snatched up like MC was, it would be an adjustment for awhile for sure, and potentially pretty dangerous! That said, I do think treatment options would probably be available; If Chica can grow eyeballs in a tube, anything is possible đ which is kind of why I moved away from the idea altogether - no sense giving the MC a disorder only to have it immediately treated/cured.
In fact... might make it a very different story; MC has a terminal illness -> is kidnapped -> is cured by Sun.
The story becomes a rescue, not a kidnapping đ
Sun would be... beyond overjoyed, and kinda baffled, at suddenly having a grateful human on his hands. Like, yeah of course he meant to do that. Oh the serendipity đ¤Ł
