I’ve been wanting to draw this for years now. It was built in 1939 for the World’s Fair then moved to Coney Island in 1940-1, and is the last standing element of Steeplechase Park—a Brooklyn landmark!

Luna Park, Coney Island (1905). The park was built two years earlier on the site of the 1895 Sea Lion Park. The park located on the north side of Surf Ave between 8th, 12th and Neptune featured oriental style buildings with over 1,000 painted spires, minarets and domes, lit with over 250,000 electric lights. At the center of the park a 200-foot tall Electric Tower, which was the centerpiece of the Pan-American Exposition two years before stood in the middle of a lake. It’s Tuesday and the weather is still a marvelous. We’d say it’s almost like we skipped spring, but it’s supposed to rain this weekend. For now, we’ll just enjoy the sunshine and dream of summer days. Perhaps days spent at Coney Island like these girls in 1939…granted we can’t explore Steeplechase park anymore (unless one of you has a Delorean or Tardis handy?), but the summer sentiment is the same.
