A view from the station

The Ghost Train
[Image ID: four gifs of a steamtrain driving under an arched bridge and along a track. The train has been modified and decorated to have a huge glowing skull on the front and glowing red lights around the front engine's wheels. In gif one as the train rolls under a bridge, it emits pyrotechnic sparks upwards. In gif two the train billows out smoke that glows purple and red. In gif three the red lights at the wheels glows on grass next to the train track. In gif four the train's carriages move past the camera, lights from the windows glowing in the dark.]

One of these steam trains was the largest to ever run in Australia and was about 250 tonnes. (With the diesel shortage now, I think these might make a comeback.)
The worse job going was having to climb into the front section to clean out built up soot and ash etc. The boiler pipes were there and yes had a lot of asbestos around the casings.
When this Crane Train left the yard we all 'knew' there was a derailment somewhere. It was powerful to lift carriages onto the track or remove debris or rerail the locomotive. In many cases a derailment was fairly minimal and the carriages were driven very slowly back over and onto the rail ,using wedge like steel devices to act as a small ramp.
and of course water tanks like this were set up all around the rail system to top up the steam train's water tanks.
