I was thinking about some sort of magic thing and Echo/Ezra having magic with a steampunk aesthetic.
Like, some spell with gears somehow, or maybe summoning steam as a visual cover or maybe even offensively to inflict burns, or maybe a steam whistle that can be used as a distraction or as a warning, or summoning steampunk automatons/creatures (Echo/Ezra summoning a steampunk dragon would be hella cool).

The Lanterns Fed by Falling Stars extract - ResidentoftheDisc/H.M
Octaviaâs stomach clenched into a fist and she fought the urge to step backwards, to avert her gaze from the apparition.
The figure stumbled forward, into the light. They moved like a broken marionette, all right-angles and uncontrolled limbs, eyes gleaming catlike with the movement. Head lolling, the gleam disappeared under a cap of golden-brown curls as Pleasant Nettles sank to their knees.
âNettles!â Octavia leapt off the front step, landing on the pavement with a spray of grit. Cursing as her head spun with the sudden loss of balance, she dashed the final metre and fell beside her partner. âNettles!â
They looked up at her, green eyes huge and unfocused, blood streaming down their face. Their poncho was missing, the grey chequered shirt stained a dark brown. Then their hand came up mechanically and seized Octaviaâs sleeve.
âLantern⌠MâŚâ
Octavia just about caught them as they pitched forwards. The panic fluttering in her lungs came out in a scream, âGet a doctor!â
âSomeoneâs given âem a good wallop with somethinâ.â Sixsmith was perched on the edge of the bed, gently pushing aside Nettlesâ curls with one hand. As the tallest, Altan was by his side, holding the lantern with a shaking grip. âSomethinâ with an edgeâŚâ
âLike what?â Emmett asked. He was by the doorway, a book thick with notes still clutched in his hands.
Sixsmith shrugged. âNot sure. But theyâre not dyinâ soâs you can sit down, Miss Starling.â
âDonât want to,â Octavia snapped. Shaking her fist, she added, âIâm gonna kill them. Iâm gonna find âem and kill âem.â
Nodding at Kizzy who was trying and failing to thread a needle, Sixsmith said, âTheyâll be long gone by now. We dunât even know where it happened. Make yourself useful and give me assistant a hand, would ya?â
Huffing furiously, Octavia slumped into the chair next to Kizzy who handed over the task immediately. It was difficult to do when your hands were quivering with rage.
Rubbing her face, Kizzy said, âDâyou think someone figured Nx Nettles out? Did they see something, mebbe?â She looked over at Octavia and added, âLike, did they say anything?â
âLantern. Lantern something.â
âSomeone hit them with a lantern?â Emmett tilted his head and frowned.
âWell, thatâd do it,â Sixsmith said, lifting Nettlesâ eyelids in turn with his thumb. Nettles mumbled a bit and half-lifted a hand to stop him. Sixsmith murmured something soothingly in Taiyeku and then added in Suli, âLeft a bit, darlinâ, please.â Altan obliged, face blank and expressionless. âGood⌠pupils both the same size⌠re-actinâ wellâŚâ
âLantern what?â Emmett asked.
Octavia tied the thread in a knot and passed the needle over to Sixsmith who motioned for her to put it on the cloth. Kizzy handed over the asepsis bowl, steam rising as Sixsmith took it gingerly. He got a second cloth and began to clean the wound, ignoring Nettlesâ weak shifting.
Frowning, Octavia closed her eyes and tried to think. âI think they were trying to say MâŚâ
Hide away, hide away, the Lantern Men are prowlingâŚ
She blinked, confused. Why had that come into her head? Where had she heard that recently? Was it in a book? Or on the street? Was that a music hall rhyme?
âDoes Lantern Men mean anything to anyone?â she asked.
Sixsmith dropped the needle. âWhat?â
âYouâve heard of them?â
ââCourse Iâve heard of the fuckinâ Lantern Men!â
âWait a second,â Emmett put his book down and grabbed another from the shelf, âArenât they childrenâs tales? In the vein of Wind Goblins or â or the Silver Hands?â He flipped through the pages, âTheyâre boogiemen figures, correct?â
Altan looked over, chewing her lip, âNettles told us, didnât they, Tave? They were a⌠you know.â
âCult thing,â Octaviaâs gaze flickered back to Sixsmithâs bloodless face. âThey said they were made up to stop kids from wandering off into town at night. Away from the ââ she made the quotation marks with her fingers â ââFamilyâ. Theyâre childrenâs tales.â
âThey all wear dark jackets, buttoned to the chin/With yellow smiles, yellow eyes, and sallow, sunken skin,â Kizzy chanted. She put her hands on her hips. âThey donât sound real to me with yellow eyes.â
Sixsmith shook his head. His voice was faint. âNo, theyâre real. But real likeâŚâ he squeezed his eyes shut, pinching the bridge of his nose. He was obviously struggling with the words. âReal like⌠like if a kid sees somethinâ bad. A person gettinâ â gettinâ knifed or somethinâ. A kid â a kid might, I dunno, say later the â the attacker had claws or somethinâ. Well⌠the Lantern Men are meta-whatsits. ForâŚâ he spat the words, âPurity patrols. Or whatever you want to call âem. The bastards who walk âround at night huntinâ⌠well⌠us.â
Emmettâs eyes suddenly lit up. âTheyâre traumatic cultural memories!â he exclaimed, âExactly like the Silver Hands except weâve got a source for the myth! A monster to warn kids to not go out at night.â
âTo warn Taiyeks,â Sixsmith corrected him grimly. âI think we spread the myth with us.â
An uneasy hush fell over the room. No one moved. Octaviaâs gaze locked with Altanâs, silent understanding passing between them. Being a reporter was dangerous â but this was something bigger and darker than all that. Their partner â perhaps â was being targeted not for something theyâd done (understandable that, Octavia felt that she wasnât doing her job properly if someone wasnât out to get her), but for something they were.
Guilt stirred in her stomach, her own words coming back to her.
Theyâre Taiyeks, sheâd said, theyâve probably just got wanderlustâŚ
Thank fuck Nettles hadnât heard that.
Nettles suddenly groaned, shattering the mood. They started to sit up, shaking their head drunkenly, when Sixsmith put a firm hand on their chest.
âNope, darlinâ, youâre stayinâ in bed.â
âRoomâs spinning.â
âWell, itâll stop if you just ââ
With surprising adroitness, Nettles twisted to the side and then threw up over the side of the bed.
The reek of vomit sent everyone save Sixsmith reeling backwards, all protesting loudly. There were a few giggles â shrill and not quite right â born of anxious bemusement.
âNettles ââ
âArgh â thatâs disgusting!â
âAt least you missed the sheets, love ââ
Sixsmith leant forwards, completely unperturbed, and ruffled Nettlesâ curls. âBetter out than in, eh?â
âI hate you.â
âYouâre in good compâny, darlinâ.â
Altan swallowed and stepped back into place, face wrinkled against the smell. Awkwardly, she sat down on the other side to Nettles and helped them lie back down. Stroking the side of their face, she murmured, âHow are you feeling, Nettles?â
âLike some fuckerâs whacked me in the head.â
âWell,â Octavia started, trying to stifle a giggle, âthatâs not too far off.â
âOh.â Nettlesâ eyes closed again. âSorry about the floor.â
âNo harm done,â Altan said.
Kizzy reached over and grabbed the lantern. âWhereâs the needle? You still gotta sew up their head â urgh, yuk!â
âGet us another one then, darlinâ,â Sixsmith said evenly.
Kizzy nodded and ran from the room.
âIâll warm up the asepsis bowl,â Emmett volunteered.
Octavia eyed him wearily. âDoes that mean Iâm stuck with the sick?â
Emmett grimaced at her apologetically, gaze - as usual - not meeting hers.
Sighing heavily, Octavia got up to find some towels and more hot water.Â

There's like, stuff, about my magic and UPG and stuff, that I'm trying to figure out.
Like. Urban symbols = awesome and all, but I've got a lot of steampunk imagery creeping into my magic too. With the pocket watches, and the keys, and the obsession with everything old and analog.
And. I've thought about a few different deities that I'd like to add into my worship. Mostly the Endless, and the blue electric angels, and (my) Luci. The OT wanted worship, but my Luci is more the type to make deals, and he's honest enough that I could get behind making a deal with him.
And figuring out what I am. I have ideas, theories, but I haven't figured it out.

I have a pocketwatch which I am using to store and trap energies.
I have a quality--and part of it is, I think, my witchery--that draws nasties to me.
The pocketwatch has a window in the cover, which I am turning into a one-way door.
I think I will use this watch to bind the nasties--fill the watch with my power as bait, wait until the nasties come in, and release them into a more permanent binding.
