So uh, if the Archdruidess was sent specifically to lure Bean to Steamland, it stands to reason she was sent pretty recently (as in, not that long before the showâs events start recent). And in Season 1 someone quips that the religion is still in its early days so uh. Did she just make up the religion specifically to make life hell for Dreamlanders?
Also whatâs up with Odval? What is his endgame? Since pretty obviously the whole âkill Zog and establish theocratic dictatorshipâ wasnât.
One thing that really bugs me about Disenchantment is how much of its humor just comes down to âhey, did you realize that the Middle Ages were awful?â Itâs rare that I find one of those gags funny; for the most part theyâre just repetitive and give the impression that weâre not supposed to like the setting. I mean, Futurama uses a lot of dystopian elements in its worldbuilding but New New York is still presented as a place that weâre supposed to like.
On that note, I think it says something that the one time that Disenchantment does try to invoke a sense of wonder, itâs for Steamland, aka New New York 2.0. (New New New York? Newer New York?)Â
Overall I just donât get the impression that the people behind this show really love fantasy the way that the Futurama crew obviously loved sci-fi. A while back @allieinardenâ and I were talking about how âThe Lonely Heart is a Hunterâ stands out for actually using selkies/animal brides, a common but less-obvious fantasy trope. Futurama threw out things like that all the time, but Disenchantment feels like itâs mostly running on fairy tales and Disney movies that the writers havenât revisited since childhood, with the Game of Thrones throne thrown in for favor. (Try saying that five times fast.) I think I would like this show more if I got the impression that Matt Groening and co. actually liked it themselves.Â
