"I’m afraid to ask”
They were small intestines, and they were delicious!
in preparation for BsAs, we researched for weeks, days, hours and among the millions of restaurants to try, Steaks By Luis, was one we HAD to get to. We made our reservation a few days in advance online and we couldn’t wait to get there.
I was pretty excited for this dinner to come all week. We had amazing meals leading up to this day but this one was going to be different, I just knew it!
Thursday came along and it was a pretty low key day since we knew we had a big night coming up.
This type of meal is a closed door dinner, usually taking place in an apartment type setting with what could be up to about 20 people. This is called an asado.
A 4-5 block walk from our apartment in Palermo, we arrive at an unmarked black door and ring the bell. It was sort of like Wizard of Oz, “who’s there??” We were welcomed by a lady named Erica and head up the stairs to the “restaurant.”
Inside was beautiful. We were greeted by some meat and cheese appetizers with a champagne pairing as the first course.
Don’t mind if I do!
About 1 minute after we walk in, we strike up some conversations with the 4 Canadian guys that got there before us. Let’s just say, Ian and I were pretty happy to have a conversation in English!
Our new friends were on a fly fishing trip in Argentina and they were overly enthusiastic about our journey ahead.
We were encouraged to walk around the restaurant, look at the meats (which I did) and act as if you were at an old friends house. It was awesome.
Don’t worry, I didn’t sneeze on the food!
After mingling and checking out the rest of the food and apartment, we were brought over to the raw meats that were to be cooked. At this point, Luis, his sous chefs and Erica gave us an overall summary of what to expect the rest of the night. We were invited to go outside on the terrace if we wanted, speak with Luis if desired or even ask to cook our dinner with him!
We were then told to sit, we were lucky enough to get spots next to our new Canadian friends and conversations continued. They were middle aged-men and they were a blast! We could talk to them for hours, and we did!
Second course was a salad. Erica joked that they serve the salad to please the 20 vegetarians that live in Argentina as it is a meat focused country. Pretty good but basic salad to start. The star was the meat so I didn’t mind too much.
Third course was a bunch of different kinds of meat. Sausages, sweet breads (this is neither sweet nor a bread, don’t be fooled!), small intestines, provoleta which is a baked and seasoned provolone cheese, multiple cuts of beef and morcilla which is a blood sausage and actually very tasty!
YUM!
Fourth course, yes, we aren’t done yet! The main event. Steak, cooked the way you would like it and for most of us that was medium rare along with a side of mashed potatoes.
All courses came with a new type of Vino and they did not skimp on the wine! The wine with the main course is made exclusively for Steaks by Luis, pretty cool!
Finally, our last course, dessert! It was a dulce de leche cheesecake. SO yummy but as you can imagine at this point, we were stuffed! On top of the steak in Argentina, another staple is dulce de leche. This stuff is in all desserts and is the most sought after sweet. And, you guessed it, this was served with wine.
After all was said and done, we left with happy bellies, full hearts and an experience never to be forgotten.
Oh yeah and new friends from around the world! Here we are with the cast and crew of one of my favorite nights of the trip!
