An accomplished attorney with more than 25 years of experience practicing law, Christopher Carson runs the Carson Law Office, an independent legal firm based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Engaged with his peers statewide, Christopher Carson is a longtime member of the State Bar of Wisconsin. Attorneys practicing in Wisconsin tend to set up shop in the state’s urban population centers. The state has 72 counties, and 15 of them have fewer than 10 practicing attorneys, with most of these counties located in the northern part of the state. In an effort to encourage attorneys to practice in rural areas, the State Bar of Wisconsin conducted the Greater Wisconsin Initiative Bus Tour in October 2018. The bar took practicing attorneys and law students through these rural counties in order to network with stakeholders in their local legal communities, (i.e., judges, other lawyers, community leaders) and perhaps spark the desire to practice in a rural area. In his comments, State Bar of Wisconsin planning group member Chad Schimmelpfenning said the Bus Tour is an effort on behalf of the bar to make access to legal services more widely available in rural Wisconsin.

The Schwab case is emblematic of the type of fraud perpetrated against immigrants by non-attorneys – and sometimes real attorneys – that the State Bar of California has been working more aggressively to investigate and prevent. Its efforts have come at a time in which the federal government, under the Trump administration, has ratcheted up its immigration enforcement activities and rhetoric.

In 2000, Kathleen (Kathy) Love joined Albuquerque, New Mexico-based law firm McGinn, Montoya, Love & Curry, PA as an associate attorney in 2000, working her way to partner within three years. Active in her field, attorney Kathy Love belongs to many professional organizations, including the New Mexico State Bar. In addition to the valuable services it provides the public and its members, the New Mexico State Bar operates a charitable foundation. Over the past five years, the foundation has provided more than 20,000 elderly state residents with legal services they would not have otherwise been able to afford. The foundation also sponsored a Student Essay Contest that saw upward of 650 high school students participate, providing them an entry point into the legal profession. All told, the foundation has spent nearly $3 million in civil legal programs over the last five years. In her role as the executive vice president and general counsel of biopharmaceutical firm UCB, Anna Richo is responsible for all of the company’s legal, corporate compliance, and intellectual property divisions. Outside of her daily work, Anna Richo is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association. In April, the Illinois State Bar Association provided the general public with pro bono consulting services as part of its Ask a Lawyer Day, which is now in its 36th year. During the event, volunteer attorneys manned telephones and responded to Skype and email questions pertaining to a number of practice areas, including personal injury claims, family court matters, and end-of-life planning. The Chicago Bar Association, DuPage County Bar Association, Lake County Bar Association, and Will County Bar Association joined the Illinois Bar to help make the event a success. Throughout the year, these organizations operate a robust referral service that connects members of the public with attorneys who provide low-cost initial consultations.
