This means a lot to me. Thank you. I spent my whole life being gaslighted by my parents and the other adults in my life who treated me like a commodity, and it really messed me up and hurt me. So I’m doing the best to be the person I needed in the world when I was younger: kind, compassionate, loving, grateful, and willing to own it when he fucks up. 

It was only this year that I realized that the world doesn’t just happen, but is something we make with our choices every single day.  We don’t have to live in the *phobic world that the Boomers lived in and Gen X was way to comfortable in when we were younger, as one glaring example. If I can help inspire younger people to do great things, if I can use the incomprehensible privilege I have (with the celebrity cheat enabled!) to do something more with my life than accumulate wealth and stuff, I will die feeling like it wasn’t a waste.

Bucky started, looking over and then down a little at the sudden tap at his elbow. He plastered a smile on his face to hide his surprise, unsurprised to see that it was a child standing next to him. Adults didn’t usually have the courage to actually physically tap him to get his attention, especially not in the produce aisle of a local supermarket.

“You’re Bucky Barnes,” the kid said matter-of-factly, and Bucky’s smile became a little more real.

“I am. And who might you be?” Bucky responded, glancing up to see a mortified woman standing a few feet back He gave her a smile before looking back at the kid.

“My name’s Nathan. You can call me Nate, everyone else does.” The kid - Nate - leaned forward a little as he said it, rocking onto his toes. “I wanna be a really good skater, like you.”

Bucky dropped into a crouch, setting his basket on the ground before straightening up again. “Yeah? What do you skate?” He asked, and Nathan looked pleased that he hadn’t tried to guess.

“Figure,” he said, grinning. “Do you miss it?” He asked suddenly, and Bucky had to think for a couple of seconds before he could work out an appropriate answer.

“I miss competing, but I still skate sometimes, between games. When you love something, you do your best to make time for it.”

“That’s smart,” Nate said before looking up at him with what Bucky could only assume was supposed to be a pleading look. After Steve’s, nothing really had the same effect on him anymore. “Can you come skate with us sometime?”

Bucky couldn’t help but laugh. “Maybe, if I’m around. Who’s your coach?”

“Misa Harrington!” Was the excited reply. “We have class on Tuesdays at City National!”

“Well,” Bucky said with a smile as Nate’s mother edged closer. “I guess I’ll have to ask your coach, since you’re so close.”

“Really?” Was the response, Nate bouncing excitedly on his toes. “You will?”

“As long as your coach says yes,” Bucky responded, before Smiling at the kid’s mother.

“Sorry,” she said with a little smile. “We’ll let you keep shopping.”

“It’s fine,” Bucky said with a grin. “It’s not the strangest place I’ve been stopped, and I don’t mind it.”

“You promise you’ll ask Misa?” Nate piped up before his mother could stop him, grinning up at Bucky.

Oh no, that’s a very plausible scenario. In fact, it’s very likely. The XO of a unit is the “executive officer,” and by definition (executive = having the power to make decisions) an XO handles a lot of the behind the scenes paperwork and other inner-unit management, especially the tedious, day-to-day stuff that would just eat up the BC’s (battalion commander, not battalion leader) time. Then, usually at a designated briefing time, the XO will weed through all of that day’s information and present the more pertinent things to their BC. The XO is often responsible for relaying info from the BC to other parts of the battalion as well.

The XO is also intended to slide into the BC’s role in their absence, so a good XO should be able to do both their job and the BC’s job effectively, making it even more reasonable that the BC might shirk off duties onto them. While not strictly a rule, most BCs will have served as an XO before being promoted to a battalion commander position, and similarly most company commanders will have served as a company XO. An XO might be in charge of overseeing maintenance, logistics, training, and/or tactics if in an applicable situation. They’re also the ones primarily responding to the supply officers, S-1 through S-6. 

Finally, a BC will typically be a lieutenant colonel and their XO will be a major. In a company, the company commander will be a captain, and their XO will be a first lieutenant.

Yes! At the moment it has my contact card. When I get a new car, I’m thinking I’ll buy a keyless entry kit to go with it so I can unlock and start my car “manually,” hurr hurr.

One step closer to becoming Bucky.

Headwind vs tailwind. If the trip was 120+ miles (6 gallons × 20 mpg) then driving upwind vs driving downwind would make a HUGE difference in gas mileage

~165 miles each way. That would make sense, given I was headed towards the coastline on the way in (the 9 gallon trip) and away from it on the way back (6 gallon), and there’s a pretty major cold front (polar vortex?) moving across the state. I didn’t know it could affect gas mileage that dramatically, wow.

Is he at least a fun biohazard?
