The Key Holder's answer was nonconsequential-- from her blush and the shy way she approached the whole thing, Cana already knew her girlfriend well enough what she wanted...and what she needed.

On the other hand, he likes to keep some things to himself, doesn't like to share his partner, so there would be a balance. He would keep in mind too, that she gets a bit flustered at public attentions. WHILE SHE COULD SAY WITH CERTAINTY THAT ATTAINED A LEVEL OF SKILL IN TRACKING PEOPLE, LOCATING A RUNAWAY HEIRESS CERTAINLY TESTED CANA'S SKILLS. That the young heiress gave Cana the slip not even an hour after their introduction was impressive and painted quite a picture for the knight that this assignment would not go as smoothly as her brethren led her to believe.

If her old squad could see her now, they would have collapsed from laughter-- or from the beating she would deal upon them for their disrespectful mockery. They wouldn't understand why she took this assignment so seriously to begin with, and Cana never explained her reasons for why she took the job so quickly. From the moment Jude Heartfilia enlisted the Captain to help select his daughter's new bodyguard, Cana modeled herself as the picture-perfect knight who embodied all the qualities a man like Jude would be looking for. He didn't need to know about her background, nor did he seem to care about her past, which was just Cana's luck:

If Jude had learned that Cana was once Lucy Heartfilia's old friend from her childhood, the likelihood of her keeping the assignment would have been neigh impossible. After all, a nobleman of Jude's standing would never allow a street rat to become close to his only daughter, much less be her friend. What would the court say after all? It just wouldn't do. But ignorance was indeed bliss, and neither Lord Heartfilia, nor his daughter suspected anything damning about Cana's upbringing. The only thing that mattered was her abilities and the determination to perform her assigned duties: of which they were now currently playing an elaborate game of hide and seek.

IT WAS FORTUNATE THAT THE KNIGHT CAUGHT UP TO THE HEIRESS QUICKLY. Though certainly not for a lack of trying on Lucy's part, Cana always had an uncanny sense of finding people-- and with Lucy, Cana was especially attuned to her presence. The moment she spotted her Lady's blonde hair, Cana pounced-- pulling her from her hiding spot, she turned her and pressed her against the wall, pinning her with just her body weight alone. She ensured to treat Lucy gently, as was deserving of her stature; however, whatever grace Lucy would expect from Cana would be in short supply, along with her patience.

Despite her stern words, the Knights' expression grew soft.

The year of Fairy Tail's disbandment was difficult for Lucy, as she was dealing with the loss of Aquarius, and the guild itself dispersing, along with still processing the trauma of what had happened with Tartaros. Leo did his best to support her in whatever way he could, whether it was through training with her or simply comforting her after a nightmare. He always reassured her that she was not alone and that she would always have him and the other spirits at her side.

Perhaps his features had become all too serious as he drifted in thought, and she aimed to pull him back into the moment, or maybe she was simply bored. In any case, her touch brought him an awareness of his expression, and he smoothed out his unconsciously furrowed brow, eyes finding hers with a slight smile forming.

He allowed her squishing of his face, mildly amused by her own expression as she did so, then he found her wrists with his hands.

“No, Lucy,” he said gently, admonishing smile in place, “This is how you do it.”

Keeping one of her hands at his face, guiding her to stroke his cheek softly, he raised her other to begin a soothing run through his hair.

SHE WAS ALWAYS KEENLY AWARE WHEN SHE WAS BEING WATCHED. WHOEVER THEY WERE, THEY WERE OBVIOUS IN THEIR INSPECTION LINGERING UPON HER PERSON-- AND THEY WERE NOT EXACTLY SUBTLE ABOUT IT. The card mage supposed that it came with the territory of her abilities, but it was also in part due to the undeniable allure of her own beauty she possessed that afforded her the ability of perception. When you were a beautiful young woman from a reputable and respected guild of wizards, it was common to draw in gazes of many admirers. Her premonition senses gauged that the individual observing her as a friendly one, so that the tension in her shoulders drooped by a margin. Just where exactly was it coming from--?   

Ah. There you are. 

On the other side of the guild hall was a lone figure standing amidst the chaos; a pretty young thing, blonde and busty with a sense of elegance that screamed Lady with a capital ‘L’. And well that certainly made the Seer curious. Just what was this little girl doing in a place like this?

Cana made it her mission to find out.

THE MOMENT THEIR EYES CONNECTED AGAIN, CANA DID NOT LOOK AWAY. She held the woman's gaze and watched the little changes play across her face: the startled surprise, to flustered embarrassment before it transformed to a wary curiosity. Cana let her smile spread slowly across her mouth, pouring all her amusement and allure in her reaction. At this point she couldn’t let this moment go: so Cana slide out from her seat at the table and sauntered towards the woman, passing by a certain playboy before stopping in front of the blonde.

‘Routine’ was a concept he had fallen out of familiarity with over recent years. Believing that any day could be his last had tended to lead him towards spontaneity more than anything, after all. Yet now, in the past few months with Lucy, they had established a routine of their own. Well, he supposed the majority of it was more of a training regime, a program designed to build her confidence and skill with combat, but the time together afterwards was certainly something else.

Typically, they would return to her apartment and talk about her training and any manner of topic (all the while he would insist on cooking her a meal to regain her energy). Other times, they would simply sit in peaceful quiet, reading or resting, feeling comfortable in each other’s presence.

Today, he relaxed on her couch, a book in hand while he waited for her to return from her shower. He continued reading even when the light scent of her soaps rolled in and heralded her emergence, he didn’t need to look up to know she was crossing the room and flinging herself down on her bed.

Long minutes passed and he stared unseeingly at the words on the pages before him, his mind instead on the activities of the day. They had gone through various light-based attacks and hand-to-hand combinations. It had been a particularly tough day of training, Lucy had done well, but he suspected she would fall asleep shortly after making it to her pillow.

She had a habit of proving him wrong it seemed.

He stilled at her question, mild surprise shifting briefly across his face before it was hidden. Despite her tired body, her mind was not ready to rest apparently. And of all things, her thoughts were now on him and his time of banishment? She never stopped surprising him. And she was certainly right, it was not a happy time as such (oh, there were good moments to be sure, don’t get him wrong) and there were aspects he’d rather forget and have others forget too. But, all the good and the bad were what he needed to acknowledge and carry.

A small sigh slipped from his lips, yet he didn’t want for her to think he was annoyed at her for bringing up the topic, so he smiled and offered a little shrug, a teasing remark. “Well, no one really knew a lot about me then, it was part of my irresistible charm~”

No, Lucy deserved better than that, he knew. He slowly closed the book, gently setting it down beside him on the couch as he lifted his gaze to his dear Summoner, his friend.

“Why did I choose the name Loke?”

He hummed, the sound unintentionally rather reminiscent of a purr, eyes lifting skyward as he thought back and adjusted his position. Stretching his legs out and leaning further a little into the couch, he turned his attention back to her as he ran a hand over his head.

“Have you ever heard of the Trickster god?” He frowned slightly and rubbed his jaw. “I can’t remember if it was on this world or another that he appeared in mostly, but he was a giant pain in the ass, I tell you.”

Despite his words, a light laugh came forth before he went on with a small shake of his head, “He was a Celestian, of ages past, known for his mischief and pranks. They also suspected he might bring on the 'end of the world', but it hasn’t happened yet... Anyway, he happened to love impersonating other spirits, or anyone really, and just making trouble.”

His fingers found his rings, idly twisting them as he went on, “He impersonated me for a while there too. So, I guess…when I found myself unable to return to the spirit world and realised I would need a new name here, I thought of him, the Trickster fooling everyone. I said his name when I was asked. And it stuck.”

SILENCE WAS A VOID THAT THE SEER FEARED WOULD THREATEN TO SWALLOW HER WHOLE. She wasn’t sure what would kill her first: a broken heart, or the resulting despair of the awaiting rejection that surely would come from the Summoner. It was a tense moment to be sure; to wait for an answer that would break or mend her was its own special hell that Cana was certain was a befitting punishment. For a moment, she feared that she would die from the anxiety rippling through her. If this was payback for all her lackadaisical teasing, then the lush would fall to her knees to beg her forgiveness. Just as long as she could still be by her side, even as friends– hell, even as her guildmate, Cana would do anything to take back her ill-chosen words–

Because…I love you too–

–her heart fell into a standstill.

She must have misheard. Blood pulsing in her veins, rushing toward her head roared loudly in her ears, drowning out the key holder’s response. The lush could only stand, mouth agape, eyes widened with surprise, because for many nights, she had dreamed this moment many times and many times, she would wake with her heart in her throat and tears unshed from her yearning. The proof that dispelled all of her fear, her doubt and anxiety of a love unrequited was receiving Lucy’s earnest and gentle kiss.

It was everything Cana wanted and more.

NO DREAM WOULD EVER COMPARE TO THE CAREFUL WAY THE SUMMONER CRADLED HER FACE, NOR THE DELIVERANCE OF THE SWEETEST KISS THAT SMILED FROM HERBLUSH-PINK LIPS. For many instances Cana had tricked, cheated, cajoled and stolen kisses from Lucy in a manner that was harmless, with no ill-intent meant. Yet she felt deceitful and disgraceful for every single one that was stolen. A sickening thought, fleeting, brief, passed in her mind that maybe Lucy didn’t really enjoy her kiss ( her company, her companionship, her presence, her, her, her– ) yet the thought was gone before it could burrow and take root in her mind.

There were no more doubts in her mind. Not with this. Not with how she felt about the key holder.

It would be the first time that Lucy’s kiss stole her breath and robbed her of coherent thought. But it would most certainly not be the last. Lucy’s sweet demeanor beckoned the card mage to respond in kind; a manner in that which Cana did not indulge in often, but nevertheless took great pleasure from the sedate pace. She could freely touch the woman who held her and who she held in return without restriction, caressing the softest spots of her flesh without question or fear of rejection. It was bliss to unleash the unfettered yearning in her heart and declare that her love was pure. Despite her demeanor: crude, loud, abrasive, hard and blunted edges that long since lost their softness– Cana felt loved.

Lucy loved her.

❝ I would never fucking joke about that, ❞ Was the Seer’s response, after they parted for breath, their faces close and embrace tight, as if they were afraid to let one another go. ❝ You need me to say it again? Alright. I love you. I love you so much that I’m pretty sure that the guild has bets on whether you or I would confess first. ❞ The thought was probable enough that it earned a giggle from the card mage, her expression tender and yet she delivered a chastising flick to the key holder’s forehead. ❝ Dummy, ❞she chided gently. ❝ You’re more than enough for me. Y'think there’s another woman alive that can handle you? Hah– no way. ❞

Chuckling, the lush carefully bumped her head against Lucy, their faces close that she could see the gold flecks spattered in the iris of her eyes. Perhaps she could see the deep blue depths and find comfort sinking in her adoration for the Summoner. She hoped so.

( God did she hope. )
