x: freshmen are not required to live in dorms, though q and i recently did a post about the pro's and con's of living off-campus your first year. you can find all the costs of the dorms on this .pdf document.
as for distance, weinstein and goddard are the closest dorms to campus, being a block or two from the main academic building. hayden hall is on the other side of the park, about a five to seven minute walk. brittany is on 10th st, so it's a seven to ten minute walk. third north and founder's hall are the furthest dorms from campus, both being around a ten minute walk.
q: freshman are not required to live in the res halls, but all freshman residence halls host programming and are made specifically for freshmen. if you're a freshman and elect not to live in a residence hall, however, you'll be assigned a commuter assistant - even if you don't technically commute - who will help integrate you into the nyu community and serve as a mentor for you during the year.

as far as distance goes, all of them are relatively close to campus, especially when compared to the upperclassmen halls.
