Take pastafarianism(a religion created as a lighthearted joke) as an example as I lead into what I'm about to say —
I was there for The Children of the Waning Star's(CWS) conception, the emojis came as the symbol before the name did, and both the symbols and the name were voted on by Gigi Jarvis's followers. I was one of them.
Quite literally *all* that happened at this "cult's" conception was people commenting their ideas for the creation of this "cult"(bad name to call it, that was Gigi's only mistake) and people hearted the idea they liked the best. Whichever comment had the most votes on it was the winner; this is how we got 'Children of the Waning Star' and '' and the star emoji(can't find it on my keyboard) became our title.
We then created an entity(much like the founder of pastafarianism created the Flying Spaghetti Monster) that "visits people in their visions/dreams" and protects the members of this "cult".
We were never compelled to carry out any harmful acts, or purport any harmful ideas.
None of us worshipped Gigi Jarvis as if she's some kind of all-encumbering god or deity. We all joined this thing because, as I'm very sure you know, people get bored.
Now, outside of my defense, and more in Gigi's- she recently lost her pet dog(which is the same as losing a friend and loved one) and, likely to cope with the loss, decided to shoot her shot and start a fake cult.
As for the handful of people who allegedly either sacrificed their pets or carved the "symbols" into their skin — those people THEMSELVES are solely responsible for their actions.
I am pleading with you, STOP taking stuff out of proportion and just running with it without doing your own research just because your favorite big creator(or even small creator) told you the CWS was a big scary cult.
Keep your heart open, people have received death threats and harassment over this.
I can also testify against the idea of this being a cult because I am religously Jewish, and G-d is my way.
