holy shit this is a really cool question for Hera

Anyways: tl;dr: Hera has two “goals” of home. Ryloth, and then an idea of “home” which drives her entire determination towards the Rebellion.

I don’t think Hera wanted to leave Ryloth. Not totally. She had a disrupted and inconsistent family structure and a father who wanted to be more of a leader of a revolution than a parent. (Not dragging Cham here--his piece is vital to the galaxy, this is just Hera’s POV). Hera saw past Ryloth and through the full galaxy--she sees how things work and her very large, very widespread point of view was too big for Ryloth. She needed to leave, but that’s still her hometown. Hera doesn’t not care about Ryloth’s fate; in fact I’d argue that if the Empire never took hold and Ryloth was still destabilized, Hera would never have left the planet and fought for her home’s rights. Hera loves her home. She loves her home planet and she loves her culture and her people. She sees what Ryloth can be, but knows it can never be that way until something is done about the galaxy first. If Ryloth ever became a place where her voice could become useful (Hera’s inherently pragmatic; this is important; if she can’t get the work done she’s going to find somewhere else to do what she needs to), she’d go back in a heartbeat.

Which plays into where she wants to live: Hera doesn’t fucking care about what planet she lives on. She doesn’t care about where she makes her home. Not only is the Ghost the longest place she’s ever known, and that, by nature of being a goddamned starship, is transient. There is no physical place Hera could point to and call home.

But, there’s that value of home she cares for more than anything. Hera cares for quality of life, for freedom, and liberty. Hera sees a galaxy, not which will ever be perfect and utopian, but one that can be a system that creates lives for people that are mostly okay. Gives them the freedom of speech, of pursuit of happiness, of the right to call one’s life good. (Hera’s one of the most philosophical characters in SW I shit you not.)

That concept of home--of a place in the universe where one feels safe enough to live their life--is what Hera wants. It’s what she dreams of. It’s why Kanan catches her off guard when he asks her if she feels a calling to Lothal. Of course Hera doesn’t. She cares about the planet because her family does, and she inherently cares about those in danger, but Hera doesn’t resonate with physical things. She resonates with the idea that there’s a future where everyone can choose their home, choose their life, and that’s also why she fights for Lothal at the end of the season.

(Is Lothal’s liberation directly related to this HC question? Not really, but I’m going there.)

It was really striking to me that Hera, who originally gave up Ryloth for the galaxy, picked Lothal to save.
