#starlight redesign

Starlight redesign sketch I knocked out yesterday + inspiration points. Hope someone else enjoys holographic paper as much as I do.

The starlights always read as shads of genderfluid to me, with Seiya especially having shades of an enby with big transmasc energy.

I have nothing against the original deign, but I think if I were making a reboot today, I’d lean into that more, and rather than have them go from stealth bros to leather short dommes, give them something that has fun with the “other systems Senshi basically wear lingerie” thing, while blending in elements that make more sense for fighting with elements that fit with their performer aesthetics. A little regency, a little scifi, and a mix of near-black leather and spandex (played here by purple), with slightly larger pops of individual color than the original’s “eh they have unique bracelets and piping”, lower heeled but still very kicky boots, and thin hard light visors which, like the Marie Antoinette ribbon mask, delight in failing at hiding identity, but ties them back to the prototype designs.

Yamino wanted to see some redesigns of the Sailor Starlight trio and you know what???

I WILL TAKE ANY OPPORTUNITY TO REDESIGN SOMETHING ESPECIALLY SAILOR MOON RELATED, OKAY!?

Basically I turned the weird leather bikini into a onesie-esque thing. It would ideally be made of a thick knit/spandex kind of like what is used for sports wear. Added some little details here and there and standardized them a bit. PLUS ridiculous version with see-thru chiffon skirts (it makes me think of Kakyuu, okay?) and back ribbons like the senshi eternal form.

PS. I traced over the images of the Starlights from the materials collection to create croquis essentially. I thought it made them look more official. haha

Starlight Redesign. I generally don't like SM redesigns because they go away from so many of the established aspects of Sailor uniforms, but the Starlight uniforms are pretty bad to begin with. Kind of combined the eternal uniforms with the Starlight uniforms, then added some Sera Myu touches because I like the idea of them wearing stage wear like things. I think it would look really cool if the yellow dots were led lights, or at least some kind of sparkly gems.

Yamino started an informal Starlight redesign, so I doodled a Healer at work today. Why? Because she has my favorite hair. Reasons!

I wanted to keep as many of the touches that make them Starlights as possible - the colors, the general shapes, and so on. You can see here Healer has her brooch, tiara, choker, and arm accessories. (I may never draw the others, but I imagined Fighter and Maker's arm bands would move to match Healer's wrist-placement.)

Anyway, long description short I went in a chic military kind of direction, because they're Srs Bsnss ladies. And I pulled their accent colors in a lot more because I like them - where Healer is green, Fighter would be blue and Maker would be violet.

 So Yamino  Had this idea to try a redesign for the outfits, and I thought to myself, okay. Costume redesigns are cool. Made a suggestion. And as the night stretched on and I couldn't sleep, I decided to doodle out my idea. 

Instead of the bra-and-booty-shorts, I decided to go for more casual, as if part of a gym uniform. Lot of star and wing repeats everywhere, with the wings on the back stretching all the way down the sleeves.

I would really like to see some redesigns of the Sailor Starlight uniforms that were a little less... well... whatever these are supposed to be:

I get that they were trying to show lots of skin to contrast with their male form, but I really am not a fan of the outfit.  Mostly because it's not something I myself would ever be willing to wear, and I would otherwise really love to dress up as one.
